[EXCERPT] . . . .

The Mothers of sultans were found to be strict in their orders and often the sultan used to find him helpless in front of orders of her mother. Whether it was about domestic decisions or strategic ones, women seems to be a source of power of men and the men even sought their suggestions in critical matters. Ibn e Battuta did not offer a detailed account of how minorities were treated in the Spain under rule of Muslims. While he does mention that the Muslim-Jew rivalry could be smelled, there are not clear evidences in his account that narrate unfair treatment of minorities.

Conclusion

Ibn e Battuta is considered one great traveler of all the times. He travelled around 75,000 miles. Someone may cover more are than him today but he will not face the level of uncertainty, hardships of travel, food supply issues and language problems as did Ibn e Battuta. While Ibn e Battuta faced many safety issues while traveling in wild lands and deserts, only advantage he had over the people of today is that he did not require a visa. The accounts of culture, religion, society and leadership of Spain that Ibn e Battuta shared are found to be most close to the reality at that time. His over 30 years of traveling experience offered him great learning that he got a chance to share with royal family members in different countries. Although Ibn e Battuta could not meet the Sultan of Spain, he did get his rewards and appreciation. It can be said that provided the limited resources and other limitations, Ibn e Battuta offered the best possible knowledge about the land of Spain as ruled by Muslims in the fourteenth century.

Quoted Instructions for "Ibn E Battuta Iban Battutah" Assignment:

This paper will be a secondary source-based historical analysis of an individual chapter or chapter subsection from The Travels of Ibn Battutah, an abridged version of his rihla, or book of travels, edited by Tim Mackintosh-Smith. We have spent several weeks now analyzing primary source documents in our discussion-based class meetings, and your charge now is to apply the interpretive and critical thinking skills you*****ve gained along the way to this new primary source. Choose a chapter or chapter subsection from the book (namely, a specific geographical location, regional polity, or individual city that Ibn Battutah visited) and analyze it as if you were a historian. This involves two interrelated components: one, seeing what his rihla can tell us about the region/society you have chosen (its form of governance, its economy, its social structure, and its culture) and/or the medieval world more generally (e.g., in terms of trans-cultural diffusion, religious practices, long-distance trade, questions surrounding race, class, and gender, etc.); and two, in so doing, comparing and/or contrasting his account with the scholarly literature on this particular time period and location.

- The chapter of the book I selected was when Iban Battutah went to Spain. At this time Spain is under Moor rule. The chapter is chapter 17: From China to Morroco, then Spain (only foucus on Spain).

- ONE OF THE SOURCES MUST BE THE BOOK
