Life is filled with Humor…or is it?

Almost all people come across humor at certain points in their lives, and, by experiencing the sensation, amusement comes into play. While there are a number of people that lack a sense of humor, the majority of people has it and shall not hesitate to smile or to laugh when they find that something is comical. People that own a sense of humor generally integrate society better, as a sense of humor is also considered to be a feature that renders an individual more companionable.

In my case, sense of humor is developed from an early age, when my father would have done just about anything to get me to smile. One does not actually have to go through a lot of trouble to get a child to smile, since children have a very developed sense of humor and would virtually laugh at the slightest chance they get. However, my father did some of the funniest things ever performed by a human being, and, furthermore, it didn't matter whether you were 3 or 93, you would have still found the man amusing.

In the present day, I consider sense of humor to be a quality, and, when I describe another person, I particularly emphasis whether or not he or she has a well-developed sense of humor. From personal experience, we know that people that have a sense of humor are capable to make other people happy and to accept a good joke when it is addressed to them.

Until they reach a certain age, children tend to act similarly regardless of their gender and situations that involve humor might appear to be appealing for both boys and girls. With the passing of years, however, differences intervene, making boys less interested in humor intended for girls and vice-versa. Some motion pictures that relate to misogyny, for example, are generally found to be humorous by men, while most women find them to be repulsive and inappropriate.

As they grow up, individuals find that their sense of humor changes and that the things that were once funny have lost their attraction. Age has a strong influence on humor because mature people have a tendency to better appreciate subtle humor. When combined with cleverness, humor can be something that most adults understand and welcome.

Humor changes depending on several intervening factors such as environment, age, education, context, and many others. For instance, one can behave differently when the environment changes and might find that an expression that did not seem funny to him or her when they were with their families has become funny once they came across it with their friends. While families and school generally tend to discourage humor that involves vulgarity, groups of friends might be inclined to approve such humor and even to encourage it. In the better developed areas of the globe people have access to more information and receive better education. In contrast, people from lesser developed countries receive little education, and thus, the respective individuals have lesser chances to become intellectuals. Humor depends on the area that you live in, and, accordingly, while people from certain geographical areas consider a particular TV-show to be amusing, people from other areas might believe that there is nothing funny about the same TV-show.

Considering the fact that people my age watched a lot of TV during the nineties, it would only be normal for us to have been influenced by the TV shows we watched. TV-series like Married with Children or Everybody loves Raymond have shaped my sense of humor and have made it what it is today. It is curious how the miserable lives of others and the mishaps that they go through can seem so amusing to us. Even the media has come to the conclusion that humor sells and that people are addicted to it. From movies like these I've learnt that humor is very important in our daily lives, and, that regardless of how much bad luck we come across, it can all be improve with a little touch of humor. Al Bundy is virtually a symbol of humor being made out of the worst situations that someone can experience.

Humor is known to depend on ethnicity, and, while the Englishman is considered to have a weird sense of humor, only understood by the English, Germans are believed to have little to no humor. Off-course, it would be pointless for someone to actually guide themselves on such principles. Surely, there are English people that lack a sense of humor just as there are funny Germans.

Besides the fact that the geographical area in which one lives in has a strong influence of his or her life, the persons with whom one interacts also have a strong influence. If one lives in a somber environment, where the surrounding individuals consider humor to be unnecessary, the respective person is predisposed to lack a sense of humor in his or her adult life. On the contrary, a person that grows up in an environment filled with humorous situations would most likely end up being an entertaining person.

My sense of humor as an adult has clearly been influenced by the various more or less humorous situations that I have come across during my life. The fact that I was raised in a first-world country has given me the opportunity to receive a good education and to learn how to distinguish between good and bad. I learnt to differentiate between good humor and bad humor, filtering the information that I was receiving and learning only what had been good. I believe that the fact that children today are receiving a lot of information through various means is not necessarily a good thing. Even if parents instruct their children to only collect information that if worth collecting, children also gather malicious information because of the fact that certain things cannot simply be filtered.

Consequent to receiving both good and bad information relating to humor, people sometimes make bad jokes or cannot understand innocent jokes directed at them. Over-sensitivity is something that is often encountered these days, with some people considering almost anything with a sense of humor to be an offense.

People working with humor have observed that people and their sense of humor have changed over the years, and, in spite of the fact that "Talk show hosts such as Jay Leno and David Letterman try to keep up the tradition"

, the public seems to be lesser and lesser receptive to humor.

Even when it has an offensive leaning, humor is often accepted by the general public. Polish jokes, for example, have grown to be very common during the last years, and, even if Polish people have clearly expressed their dissatisfaction, such jokes continue to be heard across the U.S. A reason for their frustration might be that the jokes have created a false image and that Americans tend to discriminate Polish people on the basis of the respective jokes.

My life experiences have taught me a great deal about when it is appropriate for me to create humorous situations and how I to understand subtle humor. Normally, not all jokes are funny and not every moment that is intended to be amusing reaches its goal. TV has gone a long way since its early years when everything was innocent. Nowadays people make millions of TV-shows intended to be funny, but, little of them are actually successful. Moreover, even littler actually display clever jokes that do not pass on a bad influence to the viewers. It is not surprising that people today have a hard time making the difference between a situation that is humorous and one that isn't. Consequent to receiving such a large quantity of false information, it is practically impossible for one to filter the one that is correct. Good humor is very rare these days, and, moreover, people with a sense of humor are very difficult to find. The world today is too busy to find time for an occasional laugh or even for a smile.

On a scale from one to ten when concerning how humorous I am, I believe that I would be around 7. People generally consider that I have a well-developed sense of humor and that I know how and when to make good jokes. During my life I found that jokes are vital in our daily lives, and that one definitely needs to find time for humor every now and then.

My workplace is the perfect example of a place that could not survive without humor.
