House" is a poem about Jeffers home in Carmel, and it reminds the reader of the ocean, beaches, and strength. It is a powerful and yet lyrical poem, that makes the reader feel as if they can see the house and the dedication that went in to creating it.Draws the reader into the poem and uses powerful images like "handful of lifetimes" to represent time (Jeffers 1).
This line uses alliteration "perhaps planted" to paint a word picture of the forest Jeffers created by hand (Jeffers 2).
This line completes Line 2-, giving it a staggered and jagged appearance, just like the trees he describes. He uses images "dark-leaved," and alliteration "coast cypress" and terminology that describes people as well as things, "haggard," to give a vivid picture of the trees, the reader can see them without ever being there (Jeffers 3).
Line 4 - Again, this line completes Line 3, making it a bit awkward, but it comes alive with the description "fire and the axe are devils," making it quite clear he is referring to the enemies of the trees he has painstakingly planted himself (Jeffers 4).
Line 5 - Again, his images and descriptions are important in this line, from the "foundations of sea-worn granite" toe the "fingers had the art," it is clear he hand created this home, and it is extremely important to him. He uses the words to paint a picture, and he arranges them to indicate the strength and presence of what he describes (Jeffers 5).

Line 7 - This line talks about the permanence of what he has created and the world around him. "Look in your idleness" is a beautifully wrought phrase that commands the reader to stop and think about relaxation and work, and Jeffers words this line neatly but grandly at the same time (Jeffers 7).
Line 8 - Granite is a central theme of the poem, and Jeffers uses it here twice, as if to doubly indicate how important the granite foundations of his home are to him, and to the permanence of the structure.
Line 9 - This line places the building in context, on the coast in Carmel, by he makes it lyrical and poetic with the words, "by the mouth of the Carmel" which is much richer and pleasant than "the mouth of the Carmel River," for example (Jeffers 9).
Line 10 - This line completes the previous line and tells the reader four of something that is quite important is coming up.

Prewriting Advice: Remember, an explication is a line by line analysis*****”a method of interpretation. The purpose is to make the poem's particular meanings explicit in order to interpret the poem*****s larger meaning or theme (central idea, argument*****”there are many ways to say this). You will need to explain the significance of key words and literary figures (metaphor, simile, symbols, etc.) if they occur. You should also discuss the poem's logical structure (i.e., how the ideas develop and conclude, or how the images are related). Pay close attention to the poem*****s diction and look up any words that resonate with connotation.
To prepare for this essay assignment, freewrite, brainstorm, and discuss your ideas before outlining and drafting. Don't be surprised if you find it necessary to compose numerous drafts.
Composition Strategies: To reiterate, your interpretation should be based on a close reading of what the poem expresses, i.e., it should be "detail *****" and should achieve some degree of objectivity. An explication is not a personal response paper. At the same time, you may have to go outside the boundaries of the poem to explain its significance (i.e., its historical, philosophical, or social elements). Furthermore, this explication should be original--your ideas alone. This is not a research paper and I am not interested in what other critics have written in this case. If you need help getting started or generating ideas, just ask me. In any case, your interpretation needs to be argued, explained, and supported.
Format: Your essay should be roughly 4 double-spaced, typed 3 pages. It should have a clear thesis that is developed and expanded upon in a series of coherent and related paragraphs. Create a strong, well-focused introduction and conclusion, as well as a specific, original title. Use MLA format for in-text citation (with poetry we cite by line rather than page number) and work cited.
Audience: Direct the essay to someone who has read but not carefully explicated the poem. This means that you should take your time to develop your arguments and to base them on direct references to significant words and lines in the poem. Avoid unnecessary summary and paraphrase.
