Hospital Analysis: Examining in Changes in Therapeutic Practices of Hospitals From 1800-1900Hospitals as we know them today have changed dramatically on a relatively short period of time. Even just two hundred years ago, a modern patient would not recognize the center of medical care. From 1800 to 1900, there were dramatic changes that reorganized the process of care. More professionalism and specialized care were introduced, yet the holistic approach to therapeutic care was pushed to the side.
Medical facilities before 1800 were a far cry from what they are today. Most were volunteer organizations run by religious organizations. Older hospitals were often paid for privately by charitable donations in order to provide a place to house the poor and suffering. The rich often paid dues to keep the poor and low class suffering off the streets and away from the eye of the public, while the richer classes enjoyed the benefits of having private physicians care for them within the comfort of their own homes. Essentially, treatment was just for the poor within hospital settings. According to the research, "most provided minimal medical care, but patients benefited from nursing, rest and good food."
They were locations were the poor and suffering could find charitable care, but not necessarily a cure. As such, there were ideas of separating these suffering classes from the rest of society, both for avoiding more contamination and to help hide suffering from the upper classes who were footing the bill. For example, "plague and leper hospitals, used to isolate people suffering from infectious diseases,"

Around the dawn of the 19th century, the nature of health care in hospitals began to change dramatically. During this time period, there was an explosion of new hospitals throughout Europe beginning in the 18th and 19th centuries. There was a movement away from the idea of the hospital as a charitable place to house the poor, and hospitals began to become a facility where all social classes could go to seek care for injuries and illnesses. Overall, there was a clear movement of hospitals to focus more on the sick and injured, rather than the poor and incurable that needed more long-term care. Thus, here the research suggests that "as hospitals gradually became places of care for the sick, they became more 'medicalized,' employing doctors and nurses" rather than volunteer helping isolate the poor and low classes from the rest of the society.
Hospitals began to become places for surgery, immediate care for those in need, regardless of their class or social status.
Still, as this change was occurring, there was a movement away from more long-term therapeutic practices that had been a popular method of treatment in the hospitals of the past. Hospitals no longer focused on ongoing therapies. During the one hundred years from 1800 to 1900, most care from hospitals facilities were based on acute cases, with marginalized outpatient care. Thus, patients saw care in hospitals in short stays with little regard to the implementation of long-term care strategies. In this, the hospitals of the day were "reversing outpatient and inpatient."
