One of the negative health outcomes that concerns me is the lack of access to quality care and medicine by people in low economic groups. Numerous studies have pointed to the inequity of health care delivery according to socioeconomic divisions. Sweet (2011, p. 260) reports that in the U.S. And other developed countries, "individuals lower on the economic scale have poorer average health than do those who are better off." It becomes self-perpetuating, as people with more money can get a better education, leading to better jobs that provide better health care benefits. Higher socioeconomic groups can avail themselves of preventative care, too, with gym memberships and the ability to buy most costly organic foods. They may be able to afford other kinds of care that may not be paid for by insurance plans and totally out of reach for populations who must pay for their own health care: chiropractics, massage therapy, mental health counseling, and even something as simple as vitamins.

Programs addressing the unique needs of children, particularly those at increased risk for or with special health care needs have been a focus of the public health care system for a century. The Federal Children's Bureau, established in 1912, was the first government program to serve children with severe chronic conditions. They were then called crippled children (Strickland, van Dyck, Kogan, Lauver, Cassie, Blumberg, Bethell, & Newacheck, 2011, p. 224). Yet, one hundred years later, it is reported that only 17.6% of children with special health care needs receive care meeting established standards. Socioeconomic disparities have still have not been fully addressed. It is a difficult problem and one that the last several presidential administrations have struggled with unsuccessfully. The problem is huge and there are different opinions, often politically motivated, with respect to finding solutions. As frustrating as it can be, we must continue to try to find ways that all people can have their health care needs met.

A search of the website Amazon.com reveals a number of book titles recently published that deal with the history of health care in the United States. Title include The Social Transformation of American Medicine, In Sickness and in Wealth, Health Care Reform and American Politics, and The Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office. There are a number of others. The titles suggest that health care delivery is closely linked with politics and socioeconomic status. In other words, research on the history of health care does not seem to be focused on advances in treatment as much as advances, or failures, in making sure that everyone has equal access to quality care.
