Therefore, he made sure to choose Falcon aircraft because of the confidence he had in the aircrafts ability to provide everything the company needed at the time of the initial introduction (the best of the worst kind of scenario). While the company briefly had to operate as an air taxi service in order to meet Civil Aeronautics Board regulation when it came to air cargo, they eventually managed to acquire 22 Falcons and chose 11 cities in the South and South east to set up their first route network, operating in a hub-and-spoke manner.

The way packages were flown in the early years of the company was through Memphis (outbound packages), forwarding them to their destinations. Operational research (OR) led to revealing information to which Smith and FedEx decided to cater to the cities and places that needed air cargo service so FedEx could expand. A perfect example of that was Rochester, New York. They had companies like Xerox and Kodak that had poor air cargo service in their area. Further analysis led to other cities and soon on April 17, 1973, they expanded to 26 cities. Two decades later and then a decade more after that, flying became an integral part of FedEx as they developed the FLY model, a deterministic model based on existing parameters simulating operation of aircraft and enabling creation of flight schedules[footnoteRef:3]. shipping, easy to use interface for customers and definite delivery times for those looking to get something delivered. The business had some hardships in the past, but FedEx's founder, Frederick W. Smith had an idea for the company and decided to implement innovative strategies that led to FedEx being one of the most successful mail service companies for over 40 years. Operational research is a great way to improve a company's ability to meet objectives.

Frederick saw the importance of utilizing operational research and FedEx grew. Competitors like UPS have larger airlines. However, FedEx's automated shipping system and quick turnaround provide customers with the reliable speed and accuracy they depend on. Overall, the 659 aircraft FedEx owns not only gives FedEx the ability to ship parcels worldwide, but it also gives them the speed and certainty that many other mail service companies do not have. This sets them apart and creates a highly sought after competitive advantage.
