Healthcare System ManagementIs the 5-year strategic plan sound based on the current economy?
Given the state of the current economy, Metropolis Health System's five-year strategic plan is not as sound as it could. MHS has identified five areas in which they are going to focus on in their five-year strategic plan. These include: ambulatory services, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cardiovascular services, oncology, and community health services. These areas are all expansions of things that they currently have. The health system does have a corporate depreciation fund established to help with replacing fixed assets. Although within the area they have identified to concentrate on, there may be some need for fixed asset replacement but none of these targeted projects are strictly just asset replacements. This means that funding will have to come from other sources. These sources may well have to include funding in the form of loans and in today's economy these may be hard to come by. They also have the option of raising taxes but in this economy may not go over very well.

Review the financial statements and evaluate % of profitability.
Based on the information that was provided in the case Metropolis Health System has net patient service revenue of $34,000,000 and operating expenses of $32,500,000. In order to accomplish what they have set out to do they are definitely going to have to look for other sources of funding. They might also want t

Is the staffing model meeting the needs of patient care?
At the present level of patients that the health system has their staffing model seems to be working. But with the proposed expansion in the service lines that they are proposing they will need to look at increasing their staffing model. The area that they should focus on increasing staffing would be those of their services lines, to include cardiovascular services, oncology, ambulatory services and physical medicine and rehabilitation. A hospital's clinical departments are seen as the equivalent to a business unit in a commercial organization. Each service line is responsible for the quality of the product that is delivered, the customer's satisfaction with that product, the productivity of the people who work in the department, and the department's economic performance. In the case of a hospital, the product is patient care, and economic performance is the degree to which a department provides that care (Bury, Carter, Feigelman and Grant, n.d.).
