Burleson (1984) describes how effective management structures may be described as pyramid shaped, where responsible leadership is present at each organizational level, group decision making reflects management philosophy in order to effectively bring budgetary and patient care objectives and goals into reality. Furthermore, the importance of competent, responsible leadership is key to effective organizational decision making involving groups of people in the healthcare environment (Burleson, 1984).
Technology advances through software development may aid managers in more effective decision making in regards to budget planning. Xie et al. (2005) created a software tool that can be utilized for effective budgetary planning for long-term care. This tool forecasted costs involved in the maintenance of a group of elderly individuals in long-term care. This was achieved through the combination of care costs with a survival model for long-term care residents (Xie et al., 2005).
