Some pharmacists might specialize in certain areas of healthcare such as gerontology, psychiatry, or sports medicine ("Pharmacist Career," n.d.). Some careers in the pharmaceutical field such as pharmacology are industry-related, and involve working with research and development. Therefore, laboratory positions with the pharmaceutical industry are also possible. Pharmacy also entails a number of ancillary or helping positions such as pharmacy technicians.The veterinary field encompasses all of the healthcare needs of non-human animal species. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (2011), about 80% of all careers in the veterinary healthcare field are in private practices, and address the needs of pets. A smaller proportion works with wildlife, zoo animals, farm animals, or laboratory animals. Some veterinarians work with animals in a research capacity, such as to use animals for medical testing (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011). The primary degree offered in the field of veterinary medicine in the United States is the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. Or V.M.D.). Job prospects are fairly high, although admission into doctoral programs in veterinary medicine is competitive (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011). Mean annual wages as of 2008 for veterinarians was $79,050. In addition to doctors of veterinary medicine, careers in the field include veterinary assistants and technicians.

One of the broadest areas of the healthcare industry is nursing. An ongoing nursing shortage ensures a wide range of job prospects in this challenging but diverse field. Nurses can become nurse educators, helping the next generation of nurses achieve academic excellence before embarking on a practice. Nurses can be case managers or hospital administrators, servicing in positions of leadership within an organization or in the community. Some nurses go on to work in the public health sector, working to change public policy related to healthcare issues. Nurse practitioners and staff nurses work more closely with patient populations. Moreover, Registered Nurses can choose to specialize in areas like gerontology, psychiatry, pediatrics, trauma, and infectious diseases. The career prospects of nurses are very good. Nurses can also work in diverse settings including hospitals and institutions, homes and offices, or private clinics.
Advancement in each of the healthcare fields requires commitment to the job, and keen interest in professional development. Attending seminars and workshops, taking advantage of continuing education opportunities, and embarking on leadership roles are a few of the ways to advance in any healthcare profession. Receiving the highest possible level of education ensures the best possible opportunities and salaries in each career sector.
