[EXCERPT] . . . .
Challenges in Achieving Health for All through Primary Health Care:While primary health care goals that is centered on substantial community involvement, universal, and community-based preventive and curative services, the achievement of Health for All goals based on primary health care has faced various challenges. One of the challenges is increased bureaucracy where experts and politicians have refused the principle that planning and implementing healthcare services can be conducted by communities (Hall & Taylor, 2003). These politicians and experts alike have stated that comprehensive primary health care is too expensive, idealistic, and unrealistic in its goals for achieving universal coverage.
The other challenge is the failure to maintain political commitments after the initial euphoria that characterized the Alma-Ata declaration. Furthermore, the emergence and debate over Selective Primary Health Care immediately after the Alma-Ata declaration developed a split in the global health community. This was followed by division of the main proponents of comprehensive primary health care, which hindered the achievement of Health for All goals by the year 2000 (Parsons, 2010).
Conclusion:
At the core of the 1978 Health for All Programme is the comprehensive primary health care approach that has huge benefits to individuals and communities. This is largely because comprehensive primary health care can be used in various ways to achieve these goals. However, the initial target of achieving the goals was not realized due to various challenges.
