At the same time, they will have more accountability for reaching the overall objectives of their department. This is important, because if such an approach can be taken, it could help address the underlying budgetary issues facing the facility.

Benefits

The benefits of taking this approach are: increased operational efficiency, better quality of care, lower costs and a more responsive atmosphere to the needs of patients. These different elements are important, because all of the categories mentioned above have been cited, as reasons why some people are using other facilities. If the above strategy can be utilized, it could help to create a change within the organization itself. Once this occurs, it means that the various issues can be dealt with, as the staff will be more focused on providing effective care (in the most efficient way possible). (Zahorsky, 2010)

Clearly, the hospital is facing severe challenges, as it is sitting with a business model that worked well from the 1960's to the 1990's. However, over the last ten years the situation has become very challenging. As a number of different issues have begun to affect the facility to include: rising health care costs, less coverage for patients using government programs (i.e. Medicare / Medicaid), an increasing number of uninsured patients and the lingering effects from the recession on the local community. These issues are troubling, because they could have a direct impact upon the overall state of the health care facility in the future. Where, they are eating away at the profitability of the organization itself. Unless some kind of drastic action is taken, there is very realistic possibility that the facility could face bankruptcy in the future. The above strategy is the start of process in helping to address these issues, by creating a change in the environment itself. As the different staff members could be used, to help refocus the hospital on addressing the needs of patients, while maintaining control of its finances. Over the course of time, this can improve the operational efficiency of the facility, while maintaining a low cost structure.
