Health care providers must weigh their options with respect to the insurance companies that they deal with, as well as the government, because of these changes. There may be facilities that need to adjust their strategies in order to accommodate the new reality where more payers are seeking to pay less for health care, but still get the top quality technology and care. The next few years should be interesting.

Of all the major issues that will change in the health care environment in the new few years, I would say that one of the most important of the all will be the increase in the use of technology. There are other issues, such as the use of electronic health records, the ACA and the baby boomers starting to enter their senior years, but arguably technology is the one that will be the most transformative of all.

The literature has shown that technology largely has positive results on the quality of health care. Information technology can help with things like diagnostics, and it can help patient to get better care because providers will know more about the patient and have better decision-making tools at their disposal as well (Buntin, Burke, Hoaglin & Blumenthal, 2011).

This is not to speak of the new drugs that are coming out, and the new medical equipment as well. Improvements are sometimes dramatic with new technology, as surgeries can be done with almost no invasiveness, for example, and diseases that once were fatal are now able to be treated. Technology is helping people to live longer, healthier lives. The health care industry will therefore become more dependent on technology in the coming years. This is also in

response to the other factors driving the health care industry, including the aging baby boomers that create more demand, the ACA which reduces payouts and the need to become more efficient all around. It will be fascinating to see where health care technology takes us in the coming years.

Part B. This assignment was useful, because there are so many different things that are going to bring about change to the health care industry in the coming years. The three different responses allowed me to think about the issue from three different perspectives, which I found quite valuable. I was able to think about which of these forces for change would be the most powerful, and which ones would maybe be less important. Also, this provided me with an opportunity to think about how these different factors will work together, since the health care environment is fully integrated with all of these things.

I can incorporate a few of these things into the workplace. Certainly I can be prepared for how this will affect my career. That might mean learning new skills, for example. Also, I can see how this will change the industry and that will help me chart out my career course. Another way this can be incorporated into the workplace is that I can understand some of the changes that I see in the workplace, and be a really positive leader because I know that these changes are expected and they will help the health care industry deal with what could be a very challenging, yet very exciting, time.
