[EXCERPT] . . . .

This contradictory treatment endured by Latinos is no different than that endured by African-Americans and even Japanese-Americans (some of whom went to fight overseas while their families were interred in American concentration camps) during the 1940's. These social contradictions still exist today, and hint at the fact that despite the reality that there are a multitudes of nationalities and cultures living in Los Angeles, there are certain aspects of the socio-political order that will never accept them.

There are other aspects of the Latino experience rendered within this segment of the wall which have yet to be fully rectified today, and allude to gaping social inequalities within the country. Part of the history of farm workers, especially those who are immigrants, is depicted on the wall. Migrant farm workers in California have principally been Latino, and have a lengthy struggle to procure basic human rights that is typical of any proletariat group in a capitalist struggle for labor and its rewards. One of the individuals who was instrumental in procuring these rights for migrant workers in the 1940s is shown within the mural, Luiso Moreno. Moreno worked with the Congress of Hispanic Groups to attempt to procure these rights, which is why the flag of this organization is saliently shown in this portion of the mural. This struggle transcends social boundaries because it is predominantly fixated on Latino workers, which made it a pressing political issue for these people. However, this struggle is similar to ones that African-Americans went through to get the right to work at jobs during segregated times (such as those in the 1940's). In this sense, the struggle of Latinos farm workers is a s

truggle similar to many people who are not directly descended from Europe. The triumph of the former is a social and political advancement to bringing equality to all people in Los Angeles, not just Anglo-Saxon.

In summary, the Great Wall of Los Angeles showcases both the struggles of people of various cultures and alludes to their triumphs. Those triumphs mean a modern city in which people of many heritages and nationalities co-exist with one another. In this respect, the 1940's section and the entire mural in general is representative of this effort, since it was composed of a diverse set of artisans, scholars, youths, and artists of varying nationalities which nicely reinforces the concept of diversity that the wall celebrates.
