This contradictory treatment endured by Latinos is no different than that endured by African-Americans and even Japanese-Americans (some of whom went to fight overseas while their families were interred in American concentration camps) during the 1940's. These social contradictions still exist today, and hint at the fact that despite the reality that there are a multitudes of nationalities and cultures living in Los Angeles, there are certain aspects of the socio-political order that will never accept them. There are other aspects of the Latino experience rendered within this segment of the wall which have yet to be fully rectified today, and allude to gaping social inequalities within the country. In summary, the Great Wall of Los Angeles showcases both the struggles of people of various cultures and alludes to their triumphs. Those triumphs mean a modern city in which people of many heritages and nationalities co-exist with one another. In this respect, the 1940's section and the entire mural in general is representative of this effort, since it was composed of a diverse set of artisans, scholars, youths, and artists of varying nationalities which nicely reinforces the concept of diversity that the wall celebrates.
