Furthermore, for the purpose of safety of these patients, it becomes necessary to track them in case of an adverse event.
ER medicine greatly benefits from this new technology. It provides clinicians a brief overview on the patient's health status which is especially useful for patients presenting to the ER in severe distress or shock. For patients with acute conditions, such as an acute myocardial infarction, these devices can help provide valuable metrics, such as the symptom-to-hospital time, which are crucial parameters for deciding treatment options.
The major disadvantage involved with an implantable EHR device is patient privacy. With the introduction of traceable devices, threats to system security and privacy of users have, ever since, coexisted. These threats can be a malicious agent faking an innocent medico legal request or an unsatisfied employee adding incorrect information in the database, causing confusion and damaging the system's integrity. The altered information may prove to be lethal for the patient. For example, erasing known drug allergies from the patient's data base can cause fatal adverse reactions if that drug has been administered. Another major concern is the ability of radiofrequency identification tags to be tracked. A tag reader at a particular location can track RFID labeled clothes or even banknotes. Moreover, correlating data from multiple tags, or at multiple tag reader locations, can also track social interactions, financial transactions and movement. ("Fda approves computer," 2004)
Furthermore, since these implanted chips are invisible, it would be difficult to identify what patients to scan, for patients arriving in the ER. ("Fda approves computer," 2004)
Apart from certain disadvantages, the clinical benefits that can be achieved from implantable EHRs make it an integral component of future health care. The risk of social security can be reduced by limiting the extent of content stored in these microchips. The information retrieved can be quickly crosschecked with the patient. The cost of implanting a single microchip is 0.5 dollars which makes the system extremely cost effective. Through the provision of continuous medical care and reduced system errors, mortality due to medical errors can be greatly reduced.
