Globalization has become a part of the business scenario today. In fact it is now the way of life. The globalization of many markets, including the electronics market has created a global convergence and interdependence in many areas. The reviewed news item below highlights this fact along with the need to maintain alternate sources in global sourcing. While some of the possibilities appear to be exaggerated the article points out some management paradigms that may have to be adapted to ensure continuity. While there are many features of global management, one important aspect is that of the supply chain management and the need of ensuring continuity when disasters strike. There are many views and articles that take the view that there ought to be a foresight necessary in providing for disasters. One example would be the predictions that have come out after the earth quake that devastated Japan.

There have been many dooms day statements for the event in the electronic industry. For example an article in the 'Supply Demand Chain' magazine stated that the Earth quake that stuck Japan will cause major disruptions in the global electronics supply chain. Japan is the producer of over thirteen percent of all global electronic equipments. This includes components for computers, consumer electronics devices and communications gear. Thus Japanese suppliers provide over a fifth of global semiconductor production of the worldwide market. It is predicted that the damage to Japan on account of the earth quake and floods will make global gaps in the semiconductor production and breaking of the supply chain. This will also cause a scarcity of raw materials since Japan owns ten percent of the worldwide supply wafer production. The two major DRAM fabs in Japan, operated by U.S. based-Micron and Japan's Elpida, have not been directly affected, according to preliminary indications from IHS iSuppli contacts. Review:

On May 19, 2011, the editorial staff of the 'Supply Demand Chain' magazine (2011) came out with the editorial on the possible fall out of the Japanese earth quake and the fallout on global supply chain management. A more detailed article on the subject was written by Mutschler (2002) which merits discussion. While the 'Supply Demand Chain' magazine contended that the disaster impact may cause disruption to supply chain, (Editorial Staff, 2011) Mutschler (2011) argued that before the earthquake there was a feeling that there will be an oversupply of manufacturing capacity in Japan. But with the earthquake and nuclear crisis there are speculations that show that the semiconductor and electronic industries may become starved for supplies. According to the author, the Semico Research Corp predicts a down fall of 85% in production and in 2011 there will be a greater demand while the supply would be slow. The demand will be very high in the current capacity trend, although companies like GlobalFoundries which supplies to companies like AMD, Qualcomm are functional and expect to fulfill commitments, the general market will find clogged supply pipes. (Mutschler, 2002)

The article also reports that Dale Ford, senior VP of market intelligence at IHS iSuppli, speaking of the supply chain, has stated that the production of various types of electronic equipments and its supply chain will face great crisis both inside and outside Japan.
