[EXCERPT] . . . .
Gender StratificationIn today's society, women are found as abundantly affluent in every social and professional area as men. Women are among the top executives of corporate America, in strong leading political roles, doctors, educators, lawyers, and every other professional sector throughout our country. These achievements are the result of many years of overcoming unfair and discriminatory suppression. As recent as the 1960's, women were strongly discriminated in most of the areas that they now excel. Women were once subjected solely to the duties that have incurred the definition of a homemaker. Women were expected to stay home, raise the children, prepare meals and keep the home clean and organized. It has only been during the last two to three decades that the typical stereotypes and considerations toward women and their sociological positions have changed entirely. The expected 'house-wife' has now come to take on the figure of what was once solely considered as the role of a man. It is these drastic changes; the remolding of women's roles in society from 20 to 30 years ago to today, that direct the focus of this report to provide the understanding for how women have reached the point they now have.
Survey:
Through interview 10 different individuals of various backgrounds and current situations, I was able ascertain a further awareness of the different avenues by which people have come to perceive the role of women. The subjects for this survey were divided equally in half - 5 women, and 5 men. The men all consisted of a Caucasian descent with the youngest age at 22 to the oldest at 71. Three of the men are married, one engaged, and the other liv

The subjects were each asked to describe themselves in terms of both their professional status and their personal conditions. Secondly, the subjects were asked to indicate their responsibilities in reference to a series of domestic chores, agendas, and other such related activities. The subjects place their responses on checklist that they were provided. The checklist, consisting of the domestic aspects, gave them the option of assigning which responsibility was theirs or their partners - more specifically; the male or female.
The options were: cooking, laundry, lawn care, dishwashing, bathroom cleaning, taking out the garbage, and other basic cleanliness-based responsibilities. The subjects were also asked to indicate according to whom took the most care for the children in terms of school help, comforting, and other such areas. For this part of the questionnaire, only 2 of the men and 3 of the women had children and were able to respond to the indications in this section.
Results:
The results of the survey concluded a very interesting trend among the women as compared to the men. All of the women associated the majority of the domestic responsibilities as equally done, except for the oldest. The oldest woman indicated that the majority of the domestic responsibilities were taken on by her and her alone. To the contrary, the men all indicated that the domestic responsibilities were, by majority,… READ MORE
Quoted Instructions for "Gender Stratification" Assignment:
Women have transferred over into the workforce for a variety of reasons. Have men helped to pick-up-the-slack at home? Let*****s find out*****¦..
Guidelines: Interview 10 individuals (Five women and Five men) and write a 4 page paper discussing the results of your research. Papers should be double-spaced, 12 point font with one inch margins. If possible please send all interviews via fax 714-998-8742 (I will be sending the interview sheet by fax).
Part1: Interview 10 individuals that are either married or cohabitating. Five must be women and five must be men. You cannot have two people from the same couple or household. Hint: Easiest to ask people that you know (your mother or father, your aunt or uncle etc) Fill out the attached form for each couple.
Part 2: Your essay should include:
Paragraph 1: Talk about women in the US workforce and about the traditional role of females performing housework and being caretaker. State why you are conducting your research (example: to see if couples today practice traditional roles). The last sentence of this paragraph must contain a thesis statement.
Paragraph 2: Talk about your research study. How many people did you interview, who did you interview (what is your definition of married or cohabitating couple? Did the couple have to be male and female only?) What is the age spread of your respondents? What is the race or ethnicity of your respondents? What is the work status of your respondents? How did you pick out the people that you were going to interview (was this a random sample or you picked people you knew based on availability and criteria) How did you conduct the interviews (Phone, in person, email) Tell me about your survey (What items were on your questionnaire, how could respondents respond?)
Paragraph 3: State your results. This section is to be very Objective. (For example, what percent of Males and Females did each item) Are there any clear patterns that emerged? (Example. Certain ages of women did more of the housework, or is everything one-sided? Is there a clear pattern by age or by race/ethnicity? Differences in married versus cohabitating? Difference in work status*****”meaning if you worked more outside the home, you did less of the housework? Are there any jobs that are dominated by one gender? Are women today performing more, less, or about the same amount of housework as their male counterparts? Talk about any category of job that is significant)
Paragraph 4: Discuss your results. Be very subjective in this section. You need to explain why these patterns exist. Apply some theory based on your research (example, if you found that women did the majority of the housework and they worked outside the home then you might take the conflict perspective. Hint: think Talcott Parsons or the feminist perspective, also you could use something from other chapters)
Paragraph 5: Is your research consistent with Hochschild research on the second shift? How does it differ from traditional roles of male and female? According to Bernard*****s *****his and her marriages***** who benefits more?
Paragraph 6: A brief Summary
Please be specific, thorough, and detailed. *****
