System One functions according to heuristics and intuitions that have a greater stake in our reasoning than we are aware of. These heuristics lead us to perpetuate many of our biases and prejudices as well as erroneous actions. Freud may refer to this as the subconscious. To Kahnamen, it is the crust of instinctive, intuitive and spontaneous mental judgments that is possibly evolutionary in origin and prompts us to evaluate, judge, and decide even without our realization of having done so.

System Two, on the other hand, is the more rational, deliberate way of thinking that goes into judgment and decision making. It is that which plays the chess game, deciding on every move, or which strategizes economic or political judgments etc. It is characterized by a slower more deliberate way of thinking that reflects before taking actions.

Gaining insight into System One and Two will certainly enhance the research process in various ways. Firstly, it makes me more aware of potential bias that I may even unintentionally harbor to others. This will make me all the more scrupulous in setting up preventives and controls so that my research will be as scientifically tight and objective as possible. Furthermore, I may involve a greater spectrum and range of voices in my research so as to ensure that I do not fall into the pits of my-confirmation or similar heuristics that will make me want to confirm the research rather than to question it. I will want to see the phenomena from as many different facets as possible and bringing in alternate perspectives (and consulting them) will help me do this.

Thirdly, and this is drawing on Kahnaman's illustration of the drawing of the woman who can be seen in two alternate ways (p.31), I will try to perceive every situation in more than one way, realizing that My experience -- instinctive judgments (System One) compels me to see it in a certain way. My post before;

System one, functions according to our curiosity and insights that have a greater stake in our reasoning than we are aware of. These wonderings lead us to be responsible for many of our biases and prejudices as well as wrong actions. To Kahnamen, it is our instinctive, intuitive and spontaneous mental judgments that prompt us to evaluate, judge, and decide even without our realization of having done so.

System two, on the other hand, is the more rational, intentional, calculated way of thinking that goes into judgment and decision making. It is that which plays the chess game, deciding on every move, or which strategizes economic or political judgments etc. It is characterized by a slower, more deliberate and conscious way of thinking that reflects before taking actions.

Gaining insight into system one and two will certainly enhance the research process in various ways. Firstly, it makes me more aware of my surroundings and myself. This will make me more careful in setting up preventives and controls so that my research will be objective as possible.

Furthermore, I may involve a greater scale of aspect in my research so as to ensure that I do not fall into my curiosity that will make me want to accept the research rather than to question it. I will want to see the experience from as many different angles as possible and bringing in alternative perspectives will help me do this. I will try to see every situation in more than one way, realizing that my experience ***** (System One) makes me to see it in a certain way. I will then understand and attempt to see it from another*****s perspective.

I have always known that the brain is a very powerful part of a human body, but as humans get tired the brain does as well. I thought that sleeping, or just interacting with something different was the key for success, to give a break to the brain to then start from the point left.

As I have been reading and the chapters have been unfolding themselves, I have realized that the brain is much more powerful than what I expected. The brain requires effort for it to *****maintain simultaneously in memory several ideas that require separate actions***** (pg.36) but because its just like us humans it need care and attention. This can be seen by the experiment where volunteers were asked to watch a short silent movie of a woman being interviewed, while analyzing and interpreting her body language. They were then given lemonade before the second task, half of which had sugar in it and the other half had Splenda. Since *****the nervous system consumes more glucose than most other parts of the body, and effortful mental activity appears to be especially expensive in the currency of glucose***** (pg.43) the volunteers that had Splenda over sugar showed a depletion in the responses.

This is just one of his experiments that has grabbed my attention. It is extremely interesting to see how much our brains and both systems dictate our body language in every little detail just like the dilatation of the pupil when thinking. In addition to how our systems of thinking as well have *****been shaped by evolution to provide a continuous assessment of the main problems that an organism must solve to survive***** (pg.90). Hence what I find so interesting in the work of Kahneman is that it made me think how powerful the minds of people can be because as we learn more and evolve the brain and our systems of thinking do as well.

Lastly I want to further stress Kahneman ability to have the reader relate to his writing, because as reading through it seems he is talking to me and knows my immediate response to all his experiments.

Dilated Pupils

As reading the first part of chapter two, I began experimenting the pupil theory, it had asked to count 1,2,3,4 and add one, which was an easy task. I filmed myself doing it, and my pupils barely dilated, while I added 3 to the equation, i saw my eyes clinching and dilating, due to the slight challenge (excluding that maths is my Achilles ankle).

I have always found it fascinating how the eye is literally the reflection of emotions, tension, nervousness, happiness. (Wonder how your pupils look when you are in flow?)

Subjective experience, *****Longer strings reliably caused larger deletions, the transformation task compounded the effort, and the peak of pupil size coincided with maximum effort.

System 2 protects most important activity, while system 1 takes over *****in emergencies and assigns total priority to self-protective actions*****

Flow vs. a stroll

It was interesting to see the relationship between the Flow reading and Thinking fast and Slow, there is an exert of the Flow reading in the book, it addresses the fact that flow separates two forms of effort, them being the concentration given to the task and the attention given to this task. My own example can be found when doing a very interesting project, which I put all my attention to, as well as concentration, so time seems to pass fast. Examples given in the book are playing chess and riding a motorcycle, those are indeed not effortless. *****Maintaining focused attention on these absorbing activities requires no exertion of self-control, thereby freeing resources to be directed to the task at hand.*****

Food vs. systems

I found it rather interesting to know that when your mind is busy handling system 2, the evidence shows that one person would be more inclined to go for the sweet chocolate cake rather than the fruit salad. I would never relate this reading to food, but it seems interesting that it would be the choice of any person to correlate these two things. That is because system 1 is the one controlling the behavior our decision taking when system 2 is at work. As stated in page 99, system 2 is lazy to appear, and has to be worked out. It is called the mental shotgun, which contributes to fast answers to easy question.

What I find that most of us students to is become anxious when we arrive to an exam. *****too much concern about how well one is doing in a task sometimes disrupts performance by loading short term memory with pointless anxious thoughts*****. pg. 41 We need to dedicate all the self control possible and our attention to the exam that is going to take place, not fill our minds up with thoughts that are going to waste your brains energy in a useless manner.
