Gabriel Garcia Marquez: Style and Writing

The objective of this study is to examine the style and writing of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Columbian author of more than fifteen books, which are all highly acclaimed. Marquez is a Nobel laureate as well as master of Magical Realism and is reported to be "one of the most widely read and critically acclaimed contemporary authors in the world today." (Sickles, nd, p.19) Marquez's best known work entitled "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and is reported to be such that "shook apart the literary scene in Latin America" with an impact that "reverberated around the world." (Sickles, nd, p.19) Other works held in high esteem include 'The Autumn of the Cholera'; 'No One Writes to the Colonel'; and his memoir 'Living to Tell the Tale'. Marquez has become "the symbol for Latin American literature." (Sickles, nd, p.19)

Contributions of Marquez

Understanding the contribution made to literature by Marquez requires the comprehension of the "personal, literary, and political landscapes that have shaped his work." (Sickles, nd, p.19) Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born on the 6th day of March 1927 and lived with his grandparents during the largest part of his childhood in Aracataca, Colombia, described as "a small, dusty tropical town on the coast." (Sickles, nd, p.19) Aracataca was a town that was struggling with" poverty and abandonment" according to Sickles (nd, p.19) Aracataca was also the location of the Banana Strike Massacre in 1928 in which United Fruit Corporation, a company in the U.S. provided consent for the Colombian army to open fire on a demonstration of workers and there were hundreds of t

II. The Art of Storytelling

Marquez developed his art and power of telling a story at a very young age after listening to his grandfather's tales of war and his grandmother's wonderful stories. Marquez attended the Universidad National in Bogota and studied law however, the largest part of his time was spent reading literature and writing stories. Frank Kafka's novella 'The Metamorphosis' was highly influential in the decision of Marquez to become a writer. Marquez was additionally inspired by Virginia Woolf's use of interior monologue and the narrative techniques, themes and small setting. The skill of Marquez as a writer was developed during a violent time in Colombian modern history.

III. Journalist, Reporter, and Author

Following college Marquez wrote for newspapers while he resided in Europe. The beginning of Marquez's literary career was in 1955 when 'Leaf Storm' was published. Marquez is note to have had a great deal of interaction with other writers from Latin America and some of these individuals including Marquez were those forming the "Latin American Boom" reported as "a literary movement during the 1960s when Latin American fiction received much international recognition." (Sickles, nd, p.21) the Boom authors are noted for having been influenced by "modernism, leftist politics, and Latin American writers from the 1940s and 1950s" and specifically such as Argentine Jorge Luis Borges and Alejo Carpenter from Cuba, a writer of fiction who rebelled against narrative form's tradition.
