Future Trends in Community Corrections

Community Corrections refers to sanctions that are non-prison in nature that communities or societies apply on convicted adults or juvenile criminals. This type of correction or sanction measure can be applied by order from the court of law (instead of a prison sentence) or a board (parole) following release from prison. The management of community corrections are usually under the management of probation agencies and parole entities. Examples of programs that classify as community correction measures include supervision, organized centers for criminals to report to in relation to order from the court or parole agency, halfway house, work release, and other residential equipment. The community correction measures illustrate three main objectives: enhance accountability, provision of rehabilitation services (including surveillance), and promote fiscal efficiency within the society.

The ability of the community to apply objective risks and assessment effectively and efficiently provides the opportunity for the agencies to decide on appropriate correction measure to implement in relation to the individuals. The other factor that determines the effectiveness of correction measures within the community is the sufficiency of rehabilitation programs in order to facilitate the needed change. Modern technology experiences some community correction trends such as the application of technology with the aim of monitoring orders by the courts. This trend might apply to court conditions or order on criminal acts such as drug testing, breathalyzers for testing alcoholism conditions, and systems that enhance global positioning. The other current trend i

s the ability of numerous correction agencies to work together in order to manage the criminal behavior effectively (wrap-around activities). These agencies offer to work with each other because it proves to be difficult to reduce criminal behavior for one agency to handle appropriately. Some of the agencies that collaborate in their functions include drug abuse, medical, housing, and mental health agencies. The other contemporary correction program that aims at reducing the criminal behavior within the community is inmate reentry (Bryne p. 351). This represents the new correction measure to reduce criminal behavior within the society. The aim of this program (inmate reentry) is to reduce the difference between incarceration and corrections that are community based.

The future of community correction measures needs to consider different trends in order to reduce criminal behavior effectively and efficiently. Some of the future trends for the community correction measures include

Muddling Along

Communities should realize the fact that it is not essential to embrace dangerous opportunity. The communities should also come to terms to note that risk-taking acts are not usually beneficial and rewarding to the members in the program. Activities of probation and parole are infective because of minimal resources, lack of clear purpose, absence of support from the political aspect of the society, and uncertainty of the client to manage. These shortcomings limit the capacity of probation and parole to focus on individual offenders. These developments in the contemporary community corrections would limit the needed change in the future (Robert et al., p. 119). Extinction does not reflect likely destination for parole and probation or any other related correction agency. It proves to be unacceptable not to execute your roles and expectations. Probation is ideal for judges and law courts that seek to execute formal disposition of offenders who do not serve prison terms or pay court fines. This scenario makes it possible for the community to apply muddling along trend in order to minimize criminal human, behavior. 'Muddling along' represents the condition of restoring victims and community through involving criminals in the correctional decision-making process to facilitate reduction in criminal behavior.

The aim of this trend is to reduce victimization, hold offenders accountable for their actions, minimize recidivism during the process of supervision, offer permanent reformation to the offenders, and create or enhance public safety. In order to promote effective and efficient application of 'muddling along' community correction trend in the future, it is ideal to promote accountability and transparency within the systems. Police officers have faced critical problems in trying to apply reactive patrols and community-based correction methods (Alarid p. 48). Implementation of 'muddling along' trend would offer appropriate solution to the problems faced by law enforcement agencies in trying to shift to the community-based correction measures from the reactive patrols. 'Muddling along' trend would facilitate achievement of safe societies through prevention of criminal activities.

Implementation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy-Corrections Modified (DBT-CM)

The future of community corrections should consider implementation of dialectical behavior therapy-corrections modified in order to reduce elements of crime within the society. This involves enhancement of procedures, parameters, and systems in relation to correctional attempts by the community. This trend would promote transfer of community-based programs vital for treatment into correctional activities. Clinicians, researchers, and custody professionals would play an important role in the execution of this trend of future community correction. It is essential for members of the society to adapt to these programs in to achieve full utilization of their implementation with the aim of ensuring safety of the community (Robert et al., p. 114-123).

The future of community correction trends would involve implementation of technology in the home detention sanctions. Criminals usually serve home detention as the last aspect of their jail term or irresponsible behavior. The future trend would oversee increase in the use of electronic home detection community-based sanction. Electronic home detention would facilitate reduction of criminal activities by allowing inmates the opportunity to finish their jail terms within their residential places. This would enable the society to create space within prisons to accommodate criminal offenders that might prove to be a threat to society. This trend would promote growth and development of the criminal by allowing them to attend to educational needs, obtain medical checkups, work, and access alcohol, drugs, and treatments in relation to mental health. The programs offer the opportunity for the inmates interested to fill in application forms. These criminals must meet the requirements of the program including economic cost. This indicates that community corrections in the future would be cost-effective and appropriate. The community corrections would determine aspects of improving the condition of the inmates both mentally and economically.

Application of technology in the future would also increase effectiveness and efficiency of community correction measures. The future generation would invent programs that prove to be effective in monitoring the presence of criminals when undergoing detention or probation processes. It is ideal to monitor the criminals in order to reduce criminal behavior within the society. Technology would enhance the safety of the society by detecting and addressing crimes appropriately. Technology would enable law enforcement agencies the opportunity to detect certain crimes such as drug abuse and possession of illegal properties.

Future community corrections would focus on intensive supervision acts. These trends would facilitate minimization of criminal activities by ensuring that each society member is accountable for his or her actions. Extensive supervision would entail implementation of technologies and software that have the capacity to inform the authority on the whereabouts of the inmate who is supposed to undergo probation. This would limit the interaction between other members of the society and the criminals. They would lead their live in isolation thus promotion of safety of the community (Corbett p. 308). Technology such as surveillance would offer accurate and valid information in relation to activities that are happening due to influence from the inmates. Introduction of technology would lessen the quantity of work by the probation agencies hence minimization of expenses and bureaucracy in the criminal justice. Community correction agencies would also apply the use of communication gargets such as mobile phones to highlight the presence of the inmates while living among the community members. This would reduce the cost of the correction process hence improvements in the living conditions of society members. Intensive supervision would also entail an increase in the number of officials… READ MORE
