[EXCERPT] . . . .
' Ultimately, Chris did not tell his family about his plans and died alone, possibly from misunderstanding what were the right types of plants to eat while living in an abandoned bus in Alaska or simply from starvation. His dream of being the next Tolstoy or Thoreau ended bitterly.Similarly, Paradise's dream of the pure West eventually became tainted. However, unlike McCandless who tried to get by without money, because Sal ultimately needed funds to live the type of wild existence he desired, he was forced to confront the ugly economics of working dead-end jobs for money. He even tried to earn a living picking crops to get enough money to head back to New York, illustrating the ugly and debasing side of living outside of social constraints. Ultimately, the West left Sal physically and spiritually hungry. Unlike McCandless, whose quest ended in death, Paradise had enough of a sense of self-preservation and enough of a connection to humanity to still cling to family from time to time. He sent money to his family home back East, and returned home for sustenance and a chance to write. No matter how far Sal traveled -- to California, to Mexico -- Sal Paradise knew he must always go home to New Jersey and the ideal of the ruthless pursuit of space that is part of the American dream must also be tempered with the competing American dream of pursuing security, home, mother, and a full refrigerator of apple pie.
