What is selenium. What are some food sources?
Selenium is one of the important dietary minerals required by the body in daily diet. It can be found in a few group of proteins. Scientists have called this group of proteins "selenoproteins." Minerals play the role of an antioxidant. It assists in keeping tissues healthy and so guarding against cell damage. Selenium assists in keeping the thyroid and the immune system working properly. It might assist in protecting the individual from developing certain kinds of cancers and chronic illnesses. Further studies are still going on the mineral, though (Dietitians of Canada).
What is the safe upper limit?
The Institute of Medicine of National Academics' Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) developed Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) which recommend the amount of nutrients to be consumed. The safe upper limit for selenium is 400 mcg for adults and between 45 and 280 mcg for children (NIH office of Dietary Supplements).
What types of signs may be seen with selenium toxicity?
Tachycardia and hypotension are some of the early signs of acute toxicity. Cardiac abnormalities in the earlier phase often indicate flattening and inversion as well as a prolonged QT interval. Minerals which may help improve hypertension
Magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium mineral elements help a great deal in regulating blood pressure. Particularly, they help in controlling arterial resistance. Potassium and sodium also help in the regulation of fluid balance and so influence cardiac output (Karppanen).
