Labor issues are of the utmost importance, as the agricultural and chemical industries are party to modern-day forms of slavery that are rarely challenged. Working conditions on farms, exposure to carcinogens and other toxins, and low wages are some of the labor rights issues that are part of the nefarious structure of the food industry. It is not enough to buy organic or non-GMO foods; consumers must become more aware of who is growing the food, and how. Consumer rights and consumer advocacy are in the public discourse more than labor rights and worker advocacy. The United States is behind Europe when it comes to consumer advocacy related to GMOs and even to chemical pesticides; information control and access to information related to food must become more available. Yet lobbyists and special interest groups bank on disempowering consumers by marginalizing discourse on food justice. The ecological issues associated with food justice are also central to food justice, because of the long-range impact of GMOs and chemical substances on non-human life.Works Cited
