[EXCERPT] . . . .

Changing rivers and streams causes them to overrun their banks and flood areas near them, and it also harms ecosystems that belong to birds, plants, and animals. These creatures are affected by the flooding just as human beings are, and they are not always able to pack up and move to higher ground in the same way people can. Something has to be done about the way mankind is damaging the world and creating flooding problems. Deforestation, living too close to bodies of water, and the diversion of rivers and streams all need to be curbed in order to help ensure that there will be fewer problems for generations in the future where flooding is concerned and where damage to the environment is seen.

Discussion of Evidence

Evidence into problems with flooding and the environment has been considered and addressed by many researchers in the past (Ballu, 2011; Stroeve, 2007; Lenton, et al., 2008). These researchers have seen that deforestation is playing a large role in the damage that is being done to the planet (Lenton, et al., 2008). Manmade bodies of water are also causing problems, as is the pollution and other issues that are causing climate change to bring more flooding rains to parts of the country and the world (Wentz, 2007; Keim, 2008). With that in mind, the evidence clearly points to the idea that man is responsible for much of the flooding that is seen in the world today, and that only man can change that and ensure that it is stopped (Hansen, 2000; Stroeve, 2007; Ballu, 2011).

Critical Thinking

From considering this topic, the researcher wonders about the following questions and whether they can adequately be answered:

1. How much of the flooding problems in the world today are really caused by man?

2. Is the overpopulation of the planet contributing to the problem of flooding?

3. Will planting large numbers of trees in areas where they have been cut down make a difference for communities that flood easily?

4. Is there more that mankind can do to repair the environment and lower the instances of flooding that are related to climate change?

5. Where does mankind start in order to begin correcting the problem?

Summary

Mankind is responsible for many good things in this world, and also quite a number of bad ones. Flooding and the dangers that it presents can be mitigated, but only if mankind is ready and willing to make serious changes to the way human beings live their lives. By diverting rivers and deforesting land, flooding has become a real problem. Climate change and overpopulation in flood-prone areas are also to blame for issues that cause flooding of homes and farmland. These floods are also destroying ecosystems that plants and animals need to survive, so they cause more harm to the planet than just a little bit of water for a while. Overall, mankind can fix this problem if action is taken now. If nothing is done, the flooding all over the world is only going to get worse and more ecosystems and homes are going to be destroyed by something that was mostly preventable. So much damage has already been done that things will never go back to the way that they were, but if mankind focuses in on this issue now, it is possible that the damage can be stopped and not made worse in the future.
