[EXCERPT] . . . .
Klotz-Young (2013) writes to an audience of industry professionals. The implications of the article are clear: the fire protection industry is growing and there are several potential avenues for specific growth and applications of new technology. Major disasters like Hurricane Sandy have transformed the industry as well, in terms of the need to rebuild and create cost-effective yet progressive solutions for emergency signaling and disaster response. Moreover, the expansion of fire protection codes depends on the upgrading of essential infrastructures. This points to the need for public-private partnerships, the collaboration between public policy leaders and fire protection industry leaders.Furthermore, the author addresses challenges the industry faces. For instance, fire protection technologies can be designed as proprietary systems. Yet these would lock in customers into specific models and brands, presenting limits to the long-term relationships customers forge with the industry as a whole. It has become more feasible for the industry to collaborate, creating modular systems that can suit the long-range needs of a wide customer base. Customers are also calling for building-wide integrated systems, rather than having each tenant in a large office or residential complex take care of his or her own fire protection contracts. Standardization throughout the building makes sense from a safety standpoint, but it also makes sense from the stance of cutting costs. The differences between large-scale and public needs such as fitting schools with fire protection equipment, and between smaller-scale endeavors like homes and small offices, is also outlined in the article. One of the key emerging technologi

Klotz-Young (2013) provides an optimistic overview of trends in the fire protection industry. The article is relatively thorough with good detail. However, the article could be improved by writing it to a more general audience that included primary stakeholders with no prior knowledge of the details of fire protection. For example, acronyms are never explained, and prior knowledge is simply presumed. Moreover, the author focuses mainly on surveys for the data and visualizations. It would be more productive to cull evidence from actual marketing research. Klotz-Young (2013) is also overly optimistic, failing to point out specific challenges and weaknesses that might be helpful for the target audience. Fire protection companies need to know which regions or even which cities require targeted policy changes promoting infrastructure upgrades, and which product lines have been experiencing weak sales. The analysis tends to come across as shallow. Klotz-Young (2013) also neglects to talk about the importance of retrofitting older establishments and how the industry is meeting these challenges in a systematic way.
Still the article does offer the opportunity to show how the industry is growing, how it has responded to increased demands for integrated systems, improved mass communications integration, and for more cost-effective methods of arming large blocks of space. It would be helpful to see some organized response to the issues raised in the article, such as industry coalitions that target real estate developers and politicians to improve signaling infrastructure. Likewise, industry professionals will want to know how to form future strategic partnerships that serve mutually beneficial goals.
