Several noticeable themes: preparation, timing, support and community health intervention. Most reported positive experiences; same-day surgery was less stressful for many, who had little or no post-operative issues. Data suggests that not everyone is appropriate candidate for same-day surgery, not simply physically, but psychologically as well (See also: Harmer, ed. 2011)..
Ethical considerations -- Followed ethical guidelines; able to assess certain population based solely on their experience and stay in the hospital for day-surgery.
Relative strengths of each publication -- Admittedly qualitative; literature review robust; attempts to bring greater clarity into the effects of day surgery for a specific issue with a specific population. Research is professional, results logical and presented fairly.
Relative weaknesses of each publication -- Publication is not week, article not exhaustive nor necessarily extrapolated to broad population; perhaps suggesting greater longitudinal basis and larger demographic universe.
Application of each article in nursing practices
Nurses of all areas need to understand the manner in which the new day-surgery patient may react to preparation, surgery, and recovery time. Applications to all nurses who may deal with day-surgery patients.
Conclusion of each article
Same day surgery is becoming more endemic in the area of cost-cutting and HMO healthcare concerns. The issues surrounding such surgery posit that the healthcare system be more responsive to change. Breast cancer surgery is often traumatic, and requires that each patient be clinical reviewed for appropriateness. This is particularly true for those women who are overly anxious or may have mitigating conditions that may contribute to anxiety and/or other negative feels post-surgical procedure (Taghian, Smith and Erban, 2010).
