Taking advantage of easy 'benefits' such as educational courses and other 'perks' merely compromises the integrity of the profession in a negative way in the long run -- even if the benefits that can be enjoyed might seem 'worth it' in the short run.In this sense, both deontological and utilitarian ethics from the point-of-view of the physician may be satisfied. From a deontological perspective, it is the violation of a moral law to put one's self in ethical harm's way by being unduly influenced by unscrupulous drug salespersons. And from a utilitarian perspective, the reputation of the physician and ultimately his business will be damaged by an overly permeable relationship between himself and those who do not place patient interests first. "To create high morality in your department, it is important to hold the right values" (Kouzes and Posner 2003: 68). Even if something is legal and widely practiced does not mean it is ethical or even good business sense. In the long run, even pharmaceutical companies may be impacted if public trust in their products continues to erode, thanks to unscrupulous sales techniques.
