Even though the share of college-educated women in the workforce has increased over the past several decades, female employment in STEM jobs remains low. Here is another reason this STEM perspective is so pivotal to understanding female employment and opportunity: Women working in STEM jobs earned 33% more than their non-STEM employed peers. This is a higher step (premium change) than for men comparably employed: for STEM jobs, the gender wage gap is smaller than non-STEM jobs. Once women with STEM degrees are employed, then, their situation is fairly positive: the problem is getting those STEM jobs. Fewer women have earned undergraduate SREM degrees, especially in engineering. Women with STEM degrees are more likely to work in healthcare or education than in a STEM job. Experts suggest that a constellation of variables contribute to the gender discrepancy in STEM occupations. Attribution for the STEM gender gap is typically associated with gender stereotyping, few female role models or professional mentors, and less family-friendly flexibility in STEM fields.

Understanding the gender wage gap and occupational sex segregation requires the study of the economic, educations, psychological, regional, religious, and social fabric of the national contexts. Gender-based patterns are characteristic of all societies and are only just being smoothed in countries with strong social and ethical evolution, such as Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. Social change of this magnitude comes about through relentless, lawful, political action in the national arena, and though interpersonal encounter and engagement in the local arena. e is a social liability in the same way that this dynamic exists for teachers and lower status caregivers. As can be seen in Figure 1, an avenue for addressing occupational wage gap is through union membership. As these issues come increasingly to the forefront of society, and as people vote their consciences and not their pocketbooks, social workers and counselors may see these gaps diminish in social service workers -- and other engaged workers as well.
