" This rule thus outlines the various guidelines that must be adhered to by various health care providers when it comes to the disclosure of data or health information that is protected. Such information is referred to as protected health information (PHI). According to Health Resources and Services Administration -- HRSA (2012), "the purpose of the HIPAA Security Rule is to set administrative, technical, and physical standards to protect electronic protected health information." The security rule can be seen as an emphasis on the privacy rule in that it largely concerns itself with safeguarding electronic PHI from any kind of unauthorized distribution/access.The HIPPA regulations do apply to EHRs. Although EHRs play an important role in the enhancement of efficiency, there is a need to ensure that both the security as well as privacy of patients is safeguarded in regard to their health information. Health care providers have an obligation to ensure that the development as well as the implementation of EHRs is done with the above rules in mind. For instance, under the privacy rule, providers must keep patients posted on the way their health data is shared and/or used. Under the security rule, safeguards seen to be appropriate must be developed in an attempt to ensure that patient information is protected. Safeguards in this case could be technical, administrative or even physical.
Conclusion
In my opinion, the automation of information via the adoption of EHRs is a significant step towards the enhancement of both the quality as well as efficiency of health care. However, deliberate steps have to be taken to ensure compliance with HIPAA provisions. This
