[EXCERPT] . . . .

Fearing the integration of the races and eventual revolt, the costa system was introduced by the colonialists, a system that separated the races into groups defined by heritage. This classification of the various races made it easier for the colonialists to single out people and categorize them on the economical, social and political positions, effectively controlling and determining the levels each can climb, hence the ultimate control remaining with the colonialists. This categorization has had two significant social effects in the current Latin America; the issue of racism still persists to the extent that gangs are formed along racial lines with the pretext of protecting their races. The other social impact is the perspective of the value of the Latin Americans in general, where their categorization as inferior races allowed the colonialists to exploit their labor (Miguel V.R., 2009). This is a trend that has continued with the con temporary hyper-exploitation of the working class in the region reminiscent of the colonial times which still affects the development of the region. The trend still continues to date even in foreign land like the U.S. where the Latin America laborers are generally viewed as cheaper source of labor as compared to the American labor. The flip side to this is that the American citizens have continuously viewed the Latin America region in general as a threat to their jobs, hence the social segregation has transcended the physical borders of the Latin American region to ever other place that the Latin Americans reside in.

d and wealth/resources in the hands of a few people gave rise to the stratification of the Latin American society in the colonial times and still happens in the current society, resulting in extreme inequality experienced now. The highly hierarchical systems perpetuated in the colonial times made oppression and discrimination to thrive unchecked and these were inherited by the contemporary societies with several uprisings and dissenting acts experienced within the region in the recent past (Prados L., 2005). It is however significant to point out that as the society evolves, there have been deliberate initiatives taken by both the locals and the former colonialists to restore the society to what is was initially, the changes are underway, albeit at a slower pace than everyone would like to see, but there is hope for a future society, devoid of the traces of colonialism the bedeviled the region.
