Society perceives the concept of food differently and while certain communities find particular food to be enjoyable, others can be disgusted at the mere thought of consuming it. A number of individuals consider that there is nothing wrong with eating cats, chimpanzees, and even other individuals.

The general public needs to form a general opinion regarding what it considers suitable to become food for human beings and what it does not. Even at that point however, there will be people lobbying for their right to choose what they believe to be eatable and what they consider to be indigestible.

Most people consider that as long as they do not bring damage to society, others are free to eat what ever they want. However, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the concept of food, and people are unlikely to ever agree on a general type.

It is extremely different for people to agree on what is eatable and what is not, since every time they will have the same opinion on a particular item, someone else will emerge, claiming that they find nothing wrong with performing an activity (that does not hurt society or involves the breaking of any laws) that the masses think is depraved. Regardless of what certain individuals might consider being eatable, others will believe that it is not.

All things considered, as long as the international law does not consider that killing a living being (that is not human) in order to consume it is not illegal; people are free to eat what ever they choose to, regardless of the decadence of such an act.

Considering the discussion that the subject of food has undergone across time, one could actually claim that food preferences lead to discrimination between people. Whether it relates to the European public deeming it morally wrong for the Jewish population to use cruel methods in order to produce kosher food, or whether it involves a couple separating because one individual prefers vegetarian food while the other chooses to eat meat, food is the subject of important debates and it can often lead to people violating human rights because they want to impose their standpoint.

There is no limit whatsoever to what people would be willing to eat either because of being starved or simply because they enjoy eating it. When considering those that resort to eating controversial food because they do not have anything else to eat, one might be inclined to approve of their practices. However, most individuals tend to ignore the fact that some are obliged to eat whatever they find. They also tend to relate to matters such as morality and rationality when coming across matters they do not support. However, values such as morality and rationality are insignificant when considering the struggle to survive.

In the opinion of some (vegetarians in particular), the only circumstances under which people should eat meat would be if they were in the jungle and they were attacked by an animal who (if killed) could provide the individual with the food they need in order to stay alive. It is uncertain whether or not it is better for people to become vegetarians, just as there are numerous occurrences in nature which cannot be understood by humanity.

Even though individuals who eat "disgusting" food are blamed by the masses for the repulsiveness that they provoke, they should be among the ones who should actually be admired for their behavior. By putting together their need to survive and the concept that food does not necessarily have to be bought in order to be efficient, they manage to satisfy their basic needs. It is difficult to determine which food is disgusting and which is not. However, one should agree that the masses consider all food that is thrown away is not good.

Searching for food in dumpsters is believed to be immoral and most people would feel repulsed to see that there are individuals willing to eat the remains of the food consumed by others in order to satisfy their hunger. Garbage food is often associated with poverty, criminals, and dirt. Of course, the general public is likely to consider that most (if not all) food which is thrown away is no longer eatable and can lead to severe diseases if consumed. Even those that find themselves searching through piles of garbage in order to come across food are aware of the risks that they take when engaging in such an activity.

Would people feel less repulsed to learn that the food remains in certain dumpsters is actually eatable and that the only difference between the food in the respective dumpsters and the one in the restaurants (for example) where it came from is its location? At one point, a friend of mine working in a diner noticed it was closing time and the oven still contained five chickens that did not sell that day. Hearing this, the manager told my friend that he had to throw away the food, since it was more expensive for them to keep it in the fridge than it had been to dispose of it. This does not mean that all diners do the same, but it certainly makes it possible for people to realize that "Dumpster Diving," as Nicole McClelland calls this activity, is not as immoral and dangerous as some might think it is.

Not only do a number of people (Jewish people notably feel that it is wrong to eat from the garbage, but they are certain that it is even wrong to consume particular parts from animals, such as the meat from the thigh. The same people believe that in order for them to become food, animals need to be killed in a specific way. While most individuals (even some Jewish people) believe that it is exaggerated to only eat kosher food (as it is called), it would be wrong for them to blame the ethnic group. Some have even considered the banning of kosher food to be an example of anti-Semitism.

People should be free to eat whatever they want, only that there is a limit to what they should eat. This is probably the best answer to the question "What is eatable and what isn't?." It is almost impossible for the international public to agree on certain items to be incorporated in the eatable sector. Even with that, it would be easier for the general public to function if they were to agree on certain limitations. For example, it not necessarily immoral for some to consume any animals or plants they want, as long as they do not belong to a species that is in danger of extinction. Animal activists might see this as being directed against their principles, but it is the only solution to achieving a balance between what certain groups consider to be eatable and what they believe that is not.

In the era of globalization almost everything is possible and food is no longer what it once was. While certain areas of the globe were formerly known to be the only places from where one could eat a specific food, it is presently possible for people to eat almost any type of food they want, wherever they want it (if they pay for it of course).

Food was much more precious in earlier times, as people could get it anywhere and its value depended on it availability. Spices and salt were once extremely expensive and people considered that it was very difficult for them to come across either.
