Drugs

There are several major concerns with general cocaine use which also appear as factors in the concern regard amphetamine usage as well. Both substances are proven to be addicting, and therefore this is one of the major causes for concern over their use. Although cocaine tends to have less physical signs of addiction, it still causes addiction related problems when the users stops, such as physiological problems and in some cases depression. Amphetamines are proven to have much more of a hold on their addicts. Along with the problems associated with cocaine, these drugs also have powerful physical withdrawals, making it incredibly difficult for users to go clean. Another major concern for both of these drugs is the age of their users. Both cocaine and amphetamines have begun showing up in children younger and younger as the years pass by. These drugs are also heavily associated with college age students, used both as study aids and party enhancers.

Amphetamines such as Adderall and Dexedrine are commonly prescribed to those individuals who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, or ADHD.

Typically prescribed to both children and adults with the disorder, these drugs, are used in order to calm the overactive and distracted mind encountered in patients with ADHD. This is direct contrast with the effect these drugs have on people without ADHD, which creates more hyper activity and over alertness, (Ksir, 2008). When the mind is slowed down, those suffering from ADHD can retain their attention longer on necessary tasks, such as school work or whatever needs their direct and immediate attention. Therefore, they seem to take on an opposite role than their illegal usage.

Recently in Western countries like the United States, many people have shown their concern regarding the belief that amphetamines are too easily handed out as a miracle fix for such disorders as ADHD. These drugs are serious, extremely mood and mind altering, and can have serious effects on individual users. Yet, it is a common practice to prescribe these medications based on diagnosis of ADHD and similar disorders. Many people have the concern that we are encouraging the sedation of our children who suffer from ADHD. Rather than using more extensive psychological methods, or doing more research into alternatives beyond such drug use, many doctors still turn to these drugs as a quick fix for such disorders. However, this does not guarantee any type of long-term success, for the second the individual stops taking them, the symptoms of their ADHD return.

1d. Cocaine is definitely not a drug which should be considered in any way for legalization in the United States. In order to get an idea of why this is fact, the process of legalization should be defined. The legalization of cocaine would mean that it would no longer be constituted as an illicit street drug. It would be legalized for particular uses, such as in psychiatry or other medical fields. With this legalization, you would have to obtain some sort of prescription in order to use the drug. This would also mean the government could not only better regulate its use, but also tax it as well. However, cocaine does not show to have any significant medicinal uses.
