The article observes that economic abuse amounts to abuse where an intimate partner exercises ultimate control over economic resources access of other partners. Economic abuse involves the prevention of fellow spouses from the act of resource acquisition and limiting amounts of resources used by such victims. Other indications include exploitation of the victim's economic resources. The authors add that the overall motive for preventing spouses from possessing resources includes diminishing the capacity of such victims to support them and to force them to be financial dependants on the perpetrator. The focus includes the prevention of victims from finding employment, acquiring assets, advancing or maintaining their careers, and gaining education.

The victims undergo post-traumatic stress disorders. Children living within households loaded with issues of violence continue with the abusive legacy as they attain adulthood. Domestic violence happens through contexts of child and forced marriage.
