In 2011, a housing advocacy group in Miami filed a lawsuit against real estate agencies and condo associations, alleging that they had refused to make units available to families with children (Ortega & Vasquez, 2011). The ads that formed the foundation of the lawsuit specifically stated that children under 12 were not permitted in the community, and a tester from a community advocacy group called to inquire about the ads. However, the officials involved denied that they had discriminated against families, but suggested that, at least in one case, an individual tenant had placed the ad, rather than the association. Whether or not the discrimination was approved at an association-wide level, this case makes it clear that discrimination in housing still occurs.References
