Disaster Management PlanSCENARIO
XYZ Insurance Company, with corporate offices in Miami, recently suffered significant losses due to a hurricane. The company has no formal disaster management plan; only some minimal procedures (e.g., covering the computer equipment with plastic sheeting). The firm has contracted with a professional crisis management consultant for the purpose of developing a disaster management plan. The XYZ company facility, based in Miami, is located in a tidal flood zone. This area has suffered over the past decade from severe flooding and water and wind damage due to hurricanes and other tropical storms. The company's it (information technology) department backs up all the company's data on a daily basis, but has no secure offsite repository in which to store it. The it director takes the computer disks containing the backed up data home with him every day and stores them in a filing cabinet.

II. COORDINATION and INTEGRATION of NETWORKS
Also important in this plan will be the component of effective coordination with public authorities. This will involve the establishment of policies as well as procedural methods in what will serve as a continuum of collaborative interaction with the organizations: (1) employees; (2) employee's families; (3) key customers; (4) Critical suppliers; (5) owners/stockholders, and corporate management during a crisis. Execution of the plan is dependent upon first defining the problem with clarity and understanding the various roles and levels of accountabilities among the various levels of management in the organization and as well teams must be identified along with their respective responsibilities; Risk evaluation will include the examination of loss potentials or 'threats' that present to the organization which include those of the nature of: (1) natural; (2) manmade; (3) accidental; (4) intention; (5) internal; and (6) external.
III. DISASTER Management PLAN TAILORED to ORGANIZATION
The work of Howard (1997) entitled: "Tailor Disaster Plans to Organization: RM (Risk Management" states that the 'key' to disaster planning "is to grasp what's catastrophic for a particular organization..." (Howard, 1997) That which in fact is constitutive of a disaster also in fact, Howard relates that this is referred to as 'contingency planning' because "risk analysis should go well beyond traditional insured risks and encompass the total-risk profile."(Howard, 1997) Disaster Recovery Planning is inclusive of much more than simply backing up company
