In this, both Dante and Siddhartha are placed upon their journey that may be marked through geography or chronology, but like a river, has a beginning but really, no end. This seems to be the major point of both works that, like Aristotle once said, happiness is found along the way, not at the end of the road. As a common theme, this fulfills both Siddhartha's guides (in various ways Govinda, Vasudeva and Siddhartha's Father), and Virgil and the other sinners in which Dante interacts.

As Dante progresses through his journey, they reach the River Acheron and see a continuous process of souls boarding the Ferry, rowed by Charon. "Master, I long to know what souls these are, and what strange usage makes them as eager to cross as they seem to be in this infected light." It turns out that it is Divine Justice that is transforming them because they yearn for what the fear -- something that Siddhartha learns when he interacts with both the businessperson Kama swami and the spiritual teacher Gotama, who, like Virgil, emphasizes the power of self-experience and self-wisdom.

Some have suggested that Siddhartha is, in itself, a sort of Divine Comedy in that there are levels to which both Dante and Siddhartha must traverse, there are both tragic and comedic elements to the story, and the similar themes revolve around the original meaning of the word "suffer" as the process of undergoing. To find the core theme in both works, we can see that as a goal, suffering ceases when desire ceases, and thus enlightenment is obtained through virtue and morality. each ways to escape the cycle of suffering caused by karma, and teaches dharma and the four basic facts of existence. These are finalized into pure peace and security (Dash, 2006). Yet for Dante, there is both the pagan (Virgil) and Christian ethos to combat, which may seem magical to humanity.

In fact, while it may seem wondrous to get all our wishes, as humans it would also seem that we would continue to exist as shells of our souls, but we would have no purpose or direction, no drive, nothing to work toward, nothing to fail and learn. It is our failures that propel us forward, cause technology and culture to evolve, to move into a path that transcends. This is the essence of both stories -- the archetype of the journey towards enlightenment, but through a path that requires introspection and suffering, in order to find actualization and goal orientation. As Virgil said to Dante in Purgaotira (IV, 88-95): "This mountain's of such sort that climbing it is hardest at the start; but as we rise, the slope grows less unkind. Therefore, when this slope seems to you so gentle that climbing father up will be as restful as traveling downstream by boat, you will be where this pathway ends, and there you can expect to put your weariness to rest."
