Criminal activity in the United States continues to be an issue with few solutions. Not only does crime put a damper on a healthy society, it also has the power to strain a struggling economy. The current state debt in California gave me ideas as to where our money goes and what programs can use a cut in spending, taking schools out of the question. A class article in sociology explained the costs of schools versus the costs of prisons and correctional facilities; the winner being prison and correctional facilities by a mile. This issue made me want to discover the patterns that ultimately lead an individual into a criminal life style, and by knowing this a society can greatly decline criminal behavior.

THIS OUTLINE MUST BE FOLLOWED:

Sociology 180 Social Problem Paper 4-5 pages

Section One: (10 points)

Briefly describe the social problem within the United States that you have chosen to analyze and provide your personal reasons for choosing this particular topic. Be specific about what interested you about the topic and any background you may have with the subject. "Why do you want to know more about the topic?

Section Two: (70 points)

The first paragraph of section 2 needs to state your social problem, provide credible documentation of the significance of your social problem, and provide a preview of which sociological concepts you intend to examine. You are to identify 2 different sociological factors to analyze in your paper. You are to be examining the problem and the factors that contribute to the problem in a sociological manner. You will not be examining the outcomes of the problem. The focus of the paper is to be on how society contributes to the creation of the problem. You need to clearly identify the sociological factors in your paper.

You will need to use at least 1 scholarly resource and 1 other resource to substantiate your paper. You may use any other sources to supplement. You will complete a reference section at the end of your paper.

Section Three: (10 points)

Briefly summarize the main points of the paper. Provide any thoughts you have about solutions to the problem. Discuss your personal reaction to writing this paper. "What did you learn about research, statistics, society, etc? How can you use what you learned in a practical way?

Execution: (10 points)

The following guidelines must be met for your paper:

1. Cover sheet with your name, course number, class day, time, and date at the bottom right-hand comer of the paper.

2.Papers must be typed or computer generated on clean, white 8.5 X 11 paper.

3.Use only one side of the paper.

4.Font must be no larger than 12 points and must be Times New Roman, Ariel or Garamond.

5.Paper must be double-spaced.

6.Paper must have one-inch margins all around.

7.Paper should be separated into clearly identifiable sections with headings in bold.

8. You need to include a bibliography that shows sources for information cited in your paper.

You will also be graded on:

1.Overall quality- avoid being vague - give specific examples

2.Organization/Format - guidelines of the paper were followed.

3.Grammar/Spelling

4.Coverage of topics required

My social problem ( as seen from the outline) is crime in the U.S.The 2 sociological factors ( from section two) are: 1. differential association( a theory that states: ones exposure to attitudes that are favorable to crime will lead that person toward a criminal life) 2. routine activities theory( an Interactionist Perspective that's based on the fact that crimes will increase in an area a long as easy targets are presentable).
