[EXCERPT] . . . .

The entire problem is high context communication that leaves China's true motives unclear. It is not certain what China wants. Yet, the optimal recommended strategy is for the parties to negotiate a resolution based on their interests. For China and the U.S., their interests appear to lie in the regional power structure, not in these islands. So the situation is that the two parties need to come together and negotiate on the basis of their interests.

This approach might not succeed, but resolving intercultural conflict relies on the participants finding some common ground, especially in interests. There is not even common ground right now with communication styles, so that must be addressed as well. It is recommended that a mediator help the communication. Right now the dramatically different communication styles are exacerbating this problem. China's inability to express itself clearly is a problem because we have a conflict emerging that is nothing more than smokescreen for what the real problem is. The islands should not be a part of the debate at all, so that is part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that the U.S. is rattling its sabers, but that only serves to make China's new leadership look bad, something that makes the tensions worse because it raises the stakes for China's leadership with respect to backing down. The U.S. is all but encouraging China to dig its heels in, and this could lead to a protracted conflict that at this point is not likely to even address the real interest of these nations.

Quoted Instructions for "Culture Conflict" Assignment:

For this paper, you are asked to link theory to practice and to use an analysis, problem-solving, recommendation model. Here are the expectations for this paper:

1.Choose a significant, contemporary conflict that is exacerbated by cultural issues. The conflict may be one that is currently in the news. It is important for you to choose a specific conflict, not a generic idea. For example, one quarter a student wrote on the Jena 6 conflict. This was a good choice because it was specific. However, another student wrote about affirmative action. This was NOT a good choice because it was generic. If you have any questions about this requirement, please share your ideas with me before you write your paper.

2.Research the background of that conflict and provide a historical account of the conflict (1 " 2 pages).

3.Provide an analysis of the conflict as it relates to concepts presented in the textbook (4 " 6 pages). What is the culture-related problem? For this section, you will want to choose three to five concepts in the book and discuss those in the context of the conflict. Focus on the ideas that relate to your chosen conflict and substantiate the reasons why you have linked these theories to the real world situation. How has the conflict been exacerbated by failure to incorporate the authors***** ideas, theories, or models?

4.Recommendations (1 " 2 pages). In your final section, you will want to recommend strategies for resolving the conflict using the approaches or suggestions the authors presents in the textbook.

Notes on writing assignments:

Purpose:

The final assessment paper is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of conflict and culture theory and to practice and explore where and how theory and practice connect. I believe theory provides the essential foundation for practice. It is always important to understand the ways in which theory is used to make sense of and then respond to real conflict situations. The objective of the final assessment paper is to see how the reading can be applied to real world events and how the authors***** ideas can be used to transform cultural conflicts. This will require using other sources to analyze the situations and support your arguments.

Length:

Suggestions about page limits will give you my sense of the number of pages reasonably needed to address the assignment. If your paper is significantly longer or shorter, it is likely that you failed to carefully edit your work or you did not adequately address the assignment.

Format:

Papers should be prepared in Word, double spaced, in 12 point type, with one inch margins. Use spell check and grammar check as well as doing your own proofreading. Errors in spelling and grammar detract from the content and will result in a lower grade. It is very important to cite all your references using APA citation style. APA should be used both in-text and on your reference *****
