Over time, where people have modernized their lifestyle, terrorist activities, at the same time, have only escalated to paramount heights. The major causes that have augmented the terrorist activities have widely been discussed in the dissertation. Moreover, the adverse and far-reaching impacts of terrorism has also been comprehensively discussed, and based on it, few solutions have been given as a remedy to curb this issue universally.

Introduction to Terrorism

Since the human race has first walked on the planet Earth, they have had an insatiable quest to chase, discover, and invent ground-breaking things every now and then, which has resulted in modernized and improved existing ways of livelihood. The industrial revolution, which has been experienced due to the boom in the technological and scientific arenas, is an outgrowth of human's competitive nature that has never been witnessed before. These outstanding innovations and advancements, in various facets of life, in the twenty-first century have blessed the human beings in a number of diverse aspects.

At the same time, it is also prudent to note that, in this epoch of continuous progression, social concerns have been observed to elevate at an unprecedented rate. Terrorism and crime are amongst the few grave social issues to mention that is rapidly growing day by day. In fact, it is very unfortunate to state that the wave of terrorism has not been limited to specific nations, but, people across the globe are living under its fear and terror in the recent times. In this respect, news bulletins extensively highlight the escalating episodes of terrorism that elucidates the picture how the entire world has entered a phase of global terrorism (T O'Kane, 2014).

Records reveal that no conventional definition of terrorism has been established yet. Nevertheless, in a broad-spectrum, terrorism can be classified as an act of violence and intimidation where the general public is coerced, terrorized, or incited with the intention to achieve goals and objectives that are political, social, religious, or ideological in nature. Moreover, terrorism is also defined as the illegitimate exercise of violence or power that can be against a group of people or property in order to fulfill the goal of threatening and horrifying a government, civilian, or any segment (Hanle, 2007).

Terrorist considers their missions as successful when they are able to shed the blood of hundreds of helpless and innocent civilians, which simply signifies the fact that it is one of the most heinous, hateful, and abhorrent acts that can be ever performed by humans. In other words, terrorism is no more than a nightmare to a common man, as it makes their everyday life and its related activities catastrophic. Due to the danger that is associated with terrorism, peace and tranquility from nations has seemed to vanish. Furthermore, with the escalation in the terrorist activities across the globe, the safety and security of the denizens have become at most risk (Corlett, 2003).

Kidnap, hijack, murder, firing, bomb blasts, and suicide attacks are few of the significant tools universally applied by the terrorist, which has now become an everyday matter in various parts of the world like Pakistan, Afghanistan, USA, UK, and so on. For these people, their mission is the only object in mind and no place values for them; thus, marketplaces, educational institutes, religious or holy places, office buildings, hotels, and any other public spot has become unsafe to a great extent (T O'Kane, 2014).

It has been observed that few nations have been targeted as epicenter to terrorism, however, to endorse for any country that they are serving as headquarter or control center of terrorism would perhaps be inequitable. One should never ignore the fact that terrorism in any country only results in loss of millions of lives including army people as well as civilians (Corlett, 2003).

Causes of Terrorism

While delving deep into the subject matter of terrorism, different and diverse causes have come to the forefront that persuades people to be a part of such heinous crime. Broadly speaking, socio-economic and political arenas have been determined as the root causes that have made the world populace vulnerable to terrorist activities.

Taking socio-economic causes into account, injustice is one of the preliminary elements that pollinate and propagate terrorism. People are likely to find violent actions as their core remedy if the government fails to redress or rectify the grievances of its citizens. Besides, victims easily get persuaded to the swamp slough of terrorist groups if they receive delayed or no justice and their problems that is lingered on for an extensive period. Furthermore, the aspect of dissatisfaction from the government or supreme ruler of the nation leads the individual to develop the feeling of humiliation of his rights. This acts as an incentive for the individuals that drag them to attain their rights through unlawful means (Bjorgo, 2004).

Illiteracy is another socio-economic cause that gives rise to extremism. Illiteracy or lack of education has been observed as a prime issue in several underdeveloped and developing nations. The countries with high illiteracy rates are more susceptible to terrorism because it becomes a fertile ground for the terrorist organizations that employ these people with their cause by showing them monetary benefits that they are unable to attain. In addition, lack of education eliminates their sense of realizing the consequences of their inhuman actions (Bjorgo, 2004).

Considering the socio-economic cause of unemployment, it is one of the leading and incubating reasons that beget terrorism. The accelerated rate of unemployment, in this context, has only deteriorated the situation of terrorism amongst the young generations. This illustrates the fact that the financially adverse conditions induce the young people to join extremist or terrorist groups in order to survive. The terrorist organizations look for people who can easily join them, and unemployed people are the easiest victims of such groups (Bjorgo, 2004).

Food insecurity and poverty are also substantial components of socio-economic cause that is profoundly associated with violence and increased terrorism acts. Food insecurity and high levels of poverty symbolizes that people are not even able to gain access to the basic necessities because these necessities are unaffordable for such people. This leads to the growth of social issue that arouses them to grab the very first opportunity, which will help them in fulfilling their needs of survival. Besides, extremist groups also exploit the thirst of people below the poverty line that suffers from food insecurity to a great extent (Bjorgo, 2004).

Social imbalance and regional disparities are also examined to boost the terrorism. Where the inhabitants of a specific community within the nation are socially isolated or come across a biased and unequal treatment in almost every aspect of life when compared to other citizens of the nation, they would be coerced to filch for their rights. This snatching away the rights will overwhelmingly result in terrorist acts (Durmaz, 2007).

Religious cause in many parts of the world has also come into notice that accelerates the terrorist activities. Since the religious groups are very emotional with respect to their opinions, belief, faith, and value system; thus, opposite standpoints and attitudes of people seem to be intolerable for them. Due to the unbearable opinions of others, these religious extremist people are likely to form their own groups and become immensely involved in heinous crimes (Durmaz, 2007).

Probing on the political causes, improper setup of the government and the democratic turmoil are the primary factors that cultivate the terrorism. The countries that encounter unstable or insecure government, poor domination and control of the supreme ruler, economic depression, devastated situation or absence of law and order, and so on, usually results with fragile circumstances. Additionally, the corruption at governmental levels is an addition to the problem. A government that fails to provide the citizens with their rights and adequate amount of security also intensifies the country's problems. These situations turn the nation into a prolific land where terrorism is likely to grow, nurture, and entrench its roots (Ozeren, Gunes & Al-Badayneh, 2007).

Effects of Terrorism

Terrorism not only creates a panic situation amongst the city dwellers of the state, but, also wobbles the confidence of the governmental headship. Besides, from numerous incidents of global terrorism, one can easily spot how terrorism leaves an ineffaceable mark on the lives of the people across the world.

Loss to humanity or civilian loss is one of the overwhelming psychological outcomes of this satanic act of terrorism. Millions of innocent men, women, and children become at more risks of mass killing and brutal deaths, which creates panic and frightening situation amongst a wider population (Mueller & Stewart, 2011).
