Education and Training Requirements

A high school diploma is the minimum requirement to become a flight attendant. However, with increase in the number of people with college diploma, many airlines prefer candidates with college degrees in public relations, tourisms, hospitality, social sciences, business and communication. Fight attendants wishing to work on international routes are required to be fluent in one of the major foreign languages. Moreover, individual wishing to work as a flight attendant must be at least 18 years of age; however, most airlines prefer candidates already having experience with the public. The height requirement is also mandatory to be a flight attendant. Moreover, FAA must certify a flight attendant before starting the work. However, a certification is applied to a specific aircraft that an individual is trained. To obtain a certification, flight attendants are required to pass a proficiency check, and completing employer's initial training.

Essentially, formal training is also required to prepare flight attendants for the jobs; however, flight attendants are required to possess soft skills to be successful for their jobs. For example, flight attendants must be attentive to people's needs. Moreover, flight attendants must possess communication skills that will assist them to interact effectively with passengers.

More importantly, newly hired flight attendants must undergo a six-week formal training before starting the job. Flight attendants must also possess strong customer service and listening skills that will assist them to understand passenger's needs. New flight attendants must also possess decision-making skills that w

ill assist them to act decisively in case of emergencies. Flight attendants must also have a good stamina because they may need to walk for long yours or lifting baggage. Thus, flight attendants are often required to pass a medical test.

Many airline companies provide extra duties for a newly hired flight attendant. A new flight attendant is usually placed on call after competing initial training, which is known as a reserve status. The reserve status means that an attendant must be able to report on duty at a short notice for extra flights or filling the place of absent crewmembers. In many airlines, a new flight attendant may remain on reserve status for at least a year. Sometimes, it may be longer. Some airlines place new flight attendants on reserve status for several years mostly between 5 and 10 years.

Advancement

Career advancement for flight attendants is based on seniority. Typically, flight attendant with long years of working experience exercise the most control over the flight route schedules and assignments. Senior flight attendants can choose time to spend away from home. On international routes, senior flight attendants often oversee and supervise the work of other flight attendants. Moreover, senior flight attendant could be promoted to management position and they will be responsible for instructing, recruiting and scheduling within a company. Flight attendants could also be promoted to a vice-president position. Accumulation of experiences by flight attendants could qualify them for other airline related jobs. Additional educational qualification could make airlines to transfer a flight attendant to other positions such as human resources or risk management positions.

Conclusion

The paper explores career opportunities for flight attendants. The paper identifies that job opportunities for flight attendants are likely to decline in the next 10 years if the global economy does not improve. However, the U.S. And EU economic improvement is likely to enhance the growth of airline industry which could consequently boost employment opportunities for flight attendants.
