[EXCERPT] . . . .

It is not difficult to see why Nivia is worried. As the author of this particular article points out, if no bone marrow transplant is done, Nivia is likely to have a future dotted with pain and frequent visits to the hospital. It is for this reason that 'Be The Match' requests African-Americans to 'be the match' and save those in situations like that in which Nivia has found herself in. In that regard therefore, the audience of this particular article is mainly African-Americans. However, it should also be noted that the information contained in the article could be of benefit to many other members of the society, regardless of their race or ethnic background. This is particularly the case given that the article, amongst other things, talks about the 'Be The Match Registry' and the relevance of being a marrow donor. Further, the article points out that a cure exists for diseases such as lymphoma and leukemia, two blood cancers classified as being life-threatening.

As it is pointed out in the article, "ancestry is important in matching patients to donors." This is a sound fact collaborated by several articles whose literature I analyzed. Indeed, Nivia's story is one amongst many -- individuals at steep odds of finding matches. The odds however seem steeper for mixed-race individuals such as Asian-Americans and African-Americans. At this point, it should be noted that the recipients of the bone marrow should have a genetic history similar to that of donors. It is for this reason that ancestry is regarded critical when it comes to matching donors to patients. Although no genetic basis has been found for race, the success of implanted cells is determined by some genes that must correlate with the ethni

c backgrounds of individuals. Based on the reliability of the publication in which the article appears and the fact that the information contained within the article collaborates with information in other equally reliable publications, the article can be regarded factual.

Chen, Yan, et al. "Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Patients with Acute Leukemia." Chinese Journal of Cancer Research = Chung-kuo yen cheng yen chiu 25.4 (2013): 389. Web.

In addition to this highly informative article, Chen and his coauthors have also published a number of other scholarly articles. Specifically, some of the articles penned by Chen and his coauthors or in collaboration with others not involved in this particular study include but they are not limited to Anti-cancer Effects of Ginsenoside Compound k on Pediatric Acute Myeloid Leukemia Cells and DNA Repair Gene XRCC1 Polymorphisms and Susceptibility to Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A Meta-Analysis. These articles have appeared in highly acclaimed medical publications and journal databases such as the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The journal in which the above piece of research appears, i.e. Chinese Journal of Cancer Research, is regarded a high-quality source of articles focusing on all aspects of clinical (and basic) cancer research. In that regard therefore, Chen and co's article is not only informative but also reliable. In this particular article, the authors set out to "assess the efficacy of allogeneic hematopenic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for acute leukemia (AL) and analyze the factors affecting the prognosis of these patients." In so doing, the authors make use of data collected from a total of 93 patients of AL who also happen to be undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem call transplantation. The median age of the patients in question is 30 years.

In their concluding remarks, the authors point out that the DFS of patients suffering from acute leukemia can be improved by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.… READ MORE
