Explaining Essay

As you work through each of the sections of this unit, you will be gathering ideas and inspiration to write your explanation essay. From reading the assigned essays to prewriting to peer editing, each step in the process will help you create your explanation essay. The first week will be spent pulling apart and discussing essays by B*****, Toufexis, Ngo, and Angier. You will then be asked to prewrite possible topics for your explanation. The second week of the unit will be spent writing, pulling apart, and discussing your own essays.

That said, here is what we're working toward in this unit:

For this assignment, I want you to choose ONE of the following prompts to develop into an essay. You need to have a clear purpose and idea before you begin.

I will be looking for a clear thesis, a clear outline, and a clear presentation.

In addition, you need to include THREE sources to supplement your ideas.

Your essay should be about 5 pages in length (1250 words) and follow MLA guidelines for page layout and documentation (see pages 758-773 in St. *****'s Guide).

You also need to include a works cited page following MLA specifications (see page 789 in St *****'s Guide for example).

Again, choose ONE of the following prompts:

1. As explained on page 210 of The St. *****'s Guide to Writing, "Like Toufexis, you could write an essay about love or romance, but you could choose a different focus: on its history (how and when did it develop as an idea in the West?), its cultural characteristics (how is love regarded currently among different American ethnic groups or world cultures?), its excesses or extremes [is love all you need? if abuse is present, is it still love?], its expression between parent and child [is there such a thing as the mothering instinct?], or the phases of falling in and out of love. Also consider writing about other concepts involving personal relationships, such as jealousy, codependency, idealization, stereotyping, or homophobia." OR you might choose another chemically based emotion and explain the process.

As explained on page 223 of The St. *****'s Guide to Writing, "Angier mentions several concepts associated with behavior that you might consider explaining, such as hostility, aggression, obsession, grudge, coalition, friendship, intimacy, betrayal, and reliability. She also refers to kinds of communications such as gossip and rumor. Other kinds of communication you could write about include body language, metaphor, instant messaging, sign language, and semiotics."

3. As explained on page 229 of The St. *****'s Guide to Writing, "Consider writing about some other well-established religious or cultural taboo such as murder, incest, pedophilia. Or you might consider writing about a concept that tells something about current or historical social values, practices, or attitudes. To look at changing attitudes toward immigration, for example, think about concepts like assimilation, multiculturalism, the melting pot, and race. To look at changing attitudes toward dating, consider concepts like courtship, calling, and flirting."

4. The essay "Anorexia Nervosa" by Nancy Brosseau explains the effects of this disease on her mind and body. Choose another disease and explain what causes it and how it effects people who contract it.
