The primary protagonist of the play is that of the Bridegroom, who hopes to have a 'normal' wedding. He clearly loves the Bride but lacks insight into her character: he is in love with her beauty and chooses to ignore her checkered past. Although this might seem admirable, it proves to be his undoing and brings sorrow not only to himself but also his mother. The primary antagonist of the play would seem to be Leonardo, who, despite his marriage to another woman, irresponsibly rekindles his feelings with the Bride.

However, it is equally possible to suggest that the main protagonists and antagonists of the play are not real characters at all, but more metaphorical concepts. The protagonist could be said to be the principle of 'hope over experience' which the Mother, Bridegroom, and Bride all articulate in the first act of the play. This is quickly destroyed by the antagonist forces embodied in the principle of Leonardo and Death. The characters seem less like characters at all but rather function as archetypical representations of a cosmological belief system beyond themselves. The conflict is between the desire for a fruitful and living union and the desire for the darker forces of sexuality and death (once again underlining the concept of la petite mort, or the little death of the consummated, illicit relationship between Bride and Bridegroom that ends in blood).

I found the actors to be extremely effective in the main roles. The actors playing some of the minor roles, such as Death and the Bride's servant were somewhat less effective, mainly because they were overshadowed by the performances of the other actors in the play. However, this may merely be a function of the fact

that less strong actors and actresses were found to inhabit the minor roles and would not necessarily be true in all productions of the play. I found the Mother to be particularly effective and I think it is necessary for the Mother to be played by a very strong actress, regardless of the quality of the production. The Mother is the moral anchor of the play and the first character that makes it clear to the audience that something is amiss about the prospective relationship between the two younger characters.

I think that the ability to see Blood Wedding is very important, in terms of enhancing one's overall understanding of the play. The play has a poetic, ritualistic quality about it that needs to be performed. Also, on the page, the generic nature of the characters of the Bride and Bridegroom can be somewhat faceless (they have no distinguishing names, after all) but when brought to life by living actors and actresses, their roles are far more compelling. After all, Blood Wedding is a love story.

The play was staged in a relatively spare, simple fashion which turned the attention to the storyline rather than to the sets or costumes. I think this was very appropriate, given that Lorca clearly did not intend this romance to be a drawing-room comedy or for the primary focus of the play to be centered upon lavish costumes. The primary means in which different changes of mood and setting were conveyed was through lighting and subtle music cues, not through gaudy sets.

Although the characters are not conventional 'characters' in the sense that they are sharply individuated, Blood Wedding remains a compelling play to watch. Even if the viewer does not necessarily identify with a particular individual, he or she can identify with the themes of romantic optimism that are destroyed by hate, jealously, and revenge.
