[EXCERPT] . . . .

Climate is one of the factors that determines the rate or rather the degree of this process. For instance, areas experiencing a high amount of rainfall are likely to experience significant degrees of mass wasting. This is because the surface water falling on the earth surface saturates the earth surface to a significant depth. Under the influence of gravity and favorable slope, the saturated earth may begin moving downward. Such a process is normally referred to as earth-flow (Petersen et al., 2011).

Climate also indirectly influences climate through processes such as weathering and erosion. For instance, areas experiencing high temperatures are likely to cause rocks to disintegrate slowly. This promotes mass wasting process such as rock fall. In addition, heavy rains may erode the material near the basement of a steep slope. This eliminates the support of the earth material on the higher altitudes of the slope thus promoting mass wasting processes such as slump.

Why might arid climates experience a great deal of mass wasting even though there is less annual rainfall?

Arid areas have a great amount of accumulated sand. Mudflows are forms of mass wasting processes commonly experienced in arid and semi-arid regions. As much as this region hardly receive any rain, the occasional rainstorms creates surface run-off saturating the accumulated sand on the earth surface. If the region slopes, then the saturated sand (mud) flows under the influence of gravity engulfing everything along its path. Therefore, arid areas experience a great deal of mass wasting due to the presence of accumulated loose soil on the surface. As such, the little rain (rainstorms) experie

Quoted Instructions for "Aquifers and Mass Wasting Factors" Assignment:

When examining the geology of a region for potential useable aquifers, what characteristics or factors would you consider? Also, taking into account certain natural and human factors, which areas would you avoid?

Based on the examples and discussion in Chapter 3, how does climate influence mass wasting? Also, intuitively, it would seem that rainy climates would be most susceptible to mass wasting. But why might arid climates experience a great deal of mass wasting even though there is less annual rainfall?
