8. Parents and adolescent conflict

One of the likely causes of the parental-adolescent conflict characteristic is pubertal development. One of the other likely causes is adolescent temperament. A particular temperamental characteristic may be important in early life, but less so later in life and vice versa. One of the most important temperamental characteristics in adolescents is impulsivity -- a behavioural style typified by an inclination to react intensely in an explosive and uncontrolled behaviour without weighing the consequences.

Impulsivity might result in conflicts in the parent-adolescent relationship. Adolescents who are quick to anger, even in cases of minor annoyances, might elicit conflict with parents much more often than adolescents whose emotions are more tempered. Parent-adolescent conflict is also more common when parents are thought to be unsupportive and uncaring by adolescents. Adolescents often seek much more freedom than their parents are willing to allow, which results in conflicts between the two parties (Johnson, 2006; Ellis-Schwabe & Thornbug, 1986).

9. Moral Development and juvenile delinquency, and an ideal moral education.

Notwithstanding the argument that juvenile crime is linked to child-rearing practices, there are two reasons to be cautious about deriving conclusions about the duties and responsibilities of parents regarding the criminal behaviour of their children. First, if parental behaviour is in fact causally linked to juvenile crime, there still has to be an investigation to establish if parents can be blamed for that behaviour. ental behaviour, there is still a need to investigate if the correlation is sufficient to constitute responsibility (le Sage & de Ruyter, 2008; Koh, 2012).

Proponents and opponents of criminal parental responsibilities often interpret the responsibility to prevent other people from being harmed by the behaviour of children as the responsibility to supervise, control and guard children. A well-known example is the Parental responsibility ordinance of St. Clair Shores, effectuated in 1994, which requires that parents are required to practice or exercise a reasonable amount of control to prevent the child from committing any form of delinquent acts (le Sage & de Ruyter, 2008; Koh, 2012).
